Froth Milk (Optional): Frothing milk is similarly easy as it follows all the same steps but you put milk instead of water in the chamber. Discard the water (assuming you didn’t skip the preheating phase) and add fresh water to the tank. Make sure it’s no higher than the maximum line (80ml). Now carefully tighten it to the base. It’s far from a plug-in-and-go job, but the Nanopresso actually had us asking why coffee had become so complicated, when all you really need for a wake-up call is a small and mighty piece of kit like this.

Some ‘espresso grinds’ are a little on the fine side. Costa for example to a pre-ground espresso that’s a little too fine for the Nanopresso. They also do a filter grind that works really well. The Lavazza espresso grind is fine to use I believe. If you have a pre-ground that’s a little on the fine side and it causes the Nanopresso to choke up, you could try putting a little less grinds in and tamp a little less, then it might work just right. Alternatively, if the pre-ground is too course, just tamp it a little harder than you usually would and it should slow the extraction down. Espresso tends to be darker, heavier, and richer than infusion-brewed coffee. As such, the beans are typically a darker roast, though I've noticed lighter roasts may be growing in popularity. Heat your Water: This will need to be done separately (for a portable coffee maker that heats water, your best bet is a battery-powered machine). But for good coffee (not espresso), then the AeroPress is our winner. Even though it doesn’t produce 9 bar pressure, it can still produce espresso-like coffee. If brewed correctly, with a rapid plunge, finely ground coffee, the coffee is balanced and tasty. However, it is still not as intense and without much crema. Plus, it also comes with a handy brush, allowing you to pop the grill out from inside the coffee basket and give it a deeper clean. This is particularly helpful forgetting rid of more stubborn coffee grounds that are less helpful at washing away. After conducting several tests at home and in the woods, I realized that Nanopresso would now become one of my favorite pieces of camp kitchen gear. From what I’ve read, a single espresso is made with 7g of coffee in 20 to 30’seconds making 30g of espresso. I can do this quite easily with 30 pumps. However when doing the double shot, using the same grind size, to get the 60g out of espresso it takes allot more time and pumps. Does this mean that is have to make my grind much more course to get it out in the 20 to30 second time? Do all your shots extract in that same time range? You will find counter-top coffee machines at this price point that don’t create as much pressure so it’s really impressive in a portable machine. 2. Milk Frother If you’re just as serious about coffee as we are, you’ll know that it is important that the portable machine can make an actual espresso, not just a hot under-extracted disappointment. For ease of use, you really need the barista kit to get a fully flavoured coffee. The standard basket & water reservoir are not really big enough, unless you like a small coffee - I like a standard (250 - 300ml) latte. Strictly speaking, the Staresso can only use ground coffee. However, the manufacturers do claim that it will work with Nespresso pods but this is stretching the truth a little. To use, you need to open the pods and tip the contents out and the coffee machine doesn’t include anything to pierce the foil.

But, notice how I said “coffee machine” and not “espresso machine”. Though AeroPress markets itself as an espresso maker, this isn’t entirely true. Its pressure maxes out around 0.7 bars ( 3), nowhere near what is needed to achieve a true espresso with a rich crema. What it does make is a very strong shot of coffee, suitable to be diluted with hot water or milk into your favorite beverage. If anything else, that strong cup of coffee is undeniably delicious. The Verdict There’s an EVA hard protective case with a strong zipper and a soft interior. This is perfect if you’re taking your Picopresso outdoors, offering even more protection to an already durable machine. Also in the box is a branded dosing funnel for the basket. Next, there’s an upgraded tamper with a robust steel base. This is a significant improvement on the Nanopresso, whose tamper is the base of a plastic scoop. Lastly, there’s a tiny WDT tool to break up your grinds for a cleaner extraction. If you’ve never used an outdoor espresso maker before, it takes a bit of time to work out what each component is for, so this is definitely not one to try for the first time at 7am on a weekday morning, but it’s great for taking high quality espresso with you no matter where you're going.

Thinking that i sometimes would like to have regular coffee maybe i should opt for the Aeropress, but with the barista kit one could maybe make an Americano? It is more than what most home espresso machines can deliver. Finally, the Nanopresso is less expensive than the Picopresso. However, if you want to brew double shots, the cost of the Barista Kit to do this will significantly reduce those savings.
