Keep in mind that removing the vest is just as much of a sensory experience as donning it in the first place. So directly after wearing, you will likely see a benefit as well and then your child will again, get used (habituate) to the feeling without the weight of the vest. The weighted vest will provide the proprioceptive input using deep pressure stimulation to the joints and muscles of the body. The pressure signals the brain and helps the person focus and keep calm. Since compression vests target the proprioceptive input of the child with autism, many parents and educators find them helpful during stressful times. How Do Weighted Vests Help? The use and benefits of weighted vests for children are the same for adults. However, certain adjustments can be made, so it fits the persons age and preference.

The theory behind weighted vests is to provide the child with sustained deep pressure input to his/her muscles and joints (proprioception) as this type of sensory input is known to be calming and organizing. Similar to rotating toys or other sensory strategies, using a weighted vest may come in handy sometimes, and may not be beneficial at other times. It may work for 6 months consistently and then completely lose its appeal!

Eligibility

Stereotypical behaviors are repetitive body movements or moving of objects. This behavior is often seen in people with autism and other developmental disabilities. In this particular study conducted by Chang Gung University, the researchers looked into the physiological effects that weighted vests have on anxiety. The participants in this study were all neurotypical, as well as dental patients that expressed anxiety about going to the dentist. In addition, these participants did not have previous experience using weighted blankets before. A meta-analysis (including a systematic review) that complied recent data for deep pressure therapy items, including weighted and compression vests, squeeze machines, and brushing therapy, found that none were supported by evidence for any reason (Losinski, Sanders & Wiseman, 2017). Many of the studies reported on were low-quality for a number of reasons, and it is unknown how this could contribute to the results. Weighted Vests and Autism

Although there is limited research that has been done on utilizing weighted vests on children with autism, there are studies that emphasize weighted vests and weighted blankets for those who are neurotypical but have anxiety. This data trend is not exclusive to vests – some recent data does not support implementing any single-system sensory intervention in the school environment. Single-system sensory interventions, like swings, vests, and brushing, are becoming increasingly unsupported by leaders in occupational therapy (Grajo et al, 2020; Novak, 2019; Bodison, 2018; Wong et al, 2014; Watling, 2015). Preparing your child for weighted vests A child who is unable to process various sensory inputs properly may resort to stereotypical behaviors like repeated gestures (stimming) or become clumsy, unresponsive, or overly upset.The fabric of the weighted vest is just as important to consider as the wearing schedule and weight factors! What does your child naturally gravitate towards when choosing his/her clothes? If they avoid denim or corduroy at all costs, don’t expect a weighted vest made of those materials to be welcomed!
