Slower grind time with the smaller burrs. 8-10 seconds for a double shot isn’t that long, but it does take longer than some of Eurekas other grinders. The Fausto/Atom65 will do the same in 6-7 seconds, the Atom 75 will do the same within 3-4 seconds. A few seconds might not seem like a big deal, but is something to note. With the top burr holder removed you can clean both burrs as well as inspect them for any major damage or for dullness.

All people are different regarding noise, but I can’t stand sudden loud sounds, so this is a plus. Single dosing with the Eureka Mignon? There's a timer on the Crono, allowing you to grind from 5 to 60 seconds, and you can also grind on demand by pushing and holding the grind button. Being made with brew methods in mind rather than espresso, the Crono comes with the transparent grinds basket, and not the portafilter prongs. Assembly takes no tools, but they include a hex key to adjust the portafilter fork if need be. Insert the hopper into the grinder. The portafilter fork itself pops into the front of the grinder and you are ready to go. I think all of the Mignon models will grind comfortably for manual or espresso, but I think it makes sense to look at Silenzio and Specialita for espresso, and Crono, Perfetto, or Brew Pro for manual brewing, as these have features that are more geared towards grinding for manual brewing. The Mignon grinders have very small retention, in fact, during the Clive Coffee retention comparison experiment they found that the Specialita only retained about 1.3g, which is among the lowest of all those they tested.

The higher the retention, the more coffee you're going to waste, both when using the grinder for the first time each day and also in between adjusting grind settings while dialing in.

I started out loving my Eureka Mignon Specialita. Why don't I love my Eureka Specialita as much as when I first got it nine months ago? In spite of it grinding well, the settings are not repeatable or consistent. This is not to be confused with a given dose being ground evenly throughout. But I switch up my grind for different machines and brew methods. In my case, I have two main espresso machines that I use almost daily- a Profitec Pro 700 and an Olympia Cremina lever machine. Occasionally I like to make pour-over coffee too. The Eureka Mignon Specialita Coffee Grinder features a crisp new touch-screen with 2 Programmable doses, total control of grinding time and also a continuous mode. Older espresso grinders are not built for domestic use because they hold many grinds even after you’ve finished grinding. However, since the Niche Zero came along with its emphasis on low retention, many other home grinders now concentrate on low retention too. I was actually taught to purge a whole double basket of coffee in between adjustments, which seems very wasteful, but this is because the training was done using the Mythos One, a serious commercial grinder, and this has a retention of around 13g.

The hopper cut off flap was kind of annoying and in the way. Not a very good design, yet it does work if you wish to remove a full hopper from the grinder. Once you get your grind dialed in fairly close, there are + and - buttons on the display to change the shot grinding time. Again I recommend using a scale to get as close to your desired shot weight as possible. Some people have made a single dosing funnel by cutting a bit of plastic pipe, and there are also 3D printing designs. A Hands-Free fork is suitable for every filter holder. Put the portafilter on it, and push it forward to activate the button that triggers grinding.

So purging through a full dose makes sense with a grinder like that, but you wouldn't need to purge a whole basket full with the Mignon grinders, just a couple of grams should be fine.
