Here’s why… The Phono Signature on its own sounds refined and smooth with plenty of bite when required, but adding the updated PSX-R2 power supply takes sound quality to another plane altogether. The scale is even bigger, bass gains more authority, and the precise positions of the performers and instruments in the beautifully layered sound stage are laid bare. The insightful delivery squeezes the very last drop of emotion from a recording. Knopfler’s Fender seemed to have this percussive bite every time he dug into the strings, yet his tone was so sweet and lush. The expansive reverb started to produce an image I could almost see with my mind’s eye. The image specificity produced as big an improvement as the portrayal of the reverb’s decay. This gave the guitar as well as Knopfler’s voice much better spatial placement and solidity on the soundstage, which made for very involving listening. In fact, it sounds like it drops off at around 30-35Hz. The headphone amplifier is the ultimate design. No compromise. No coupling capacitors. Not even on the output. All of the the amplifier is DC coupled. A very fast DC servo assures no DC voltage on the output. Its output power is suitable for all kind of headphones.The circuit demonstrated below provides a fundamental design concept, although not quite ideal, the final results to date are encouraging. True clipping of the input signal is not going to take place until eventually significantly bigger levels above the minimum guitar specs are utilized. The upper -3dB response of the unit is still at about 200kHz even if the amplifier is used at a voltage gain of hundred times. When used as lower gains the upper -3dB point is pushed proportionately higher. The lower -3dB point is at approximately 20 Hertz incidentally. Another Transistorized Preamp design Rega didn't exactly reinvent the wheel with the Mk5 model, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. That new case is certainly attractive enough, while that same agile, punchy performance gives you just the sound you're looking for if you like your music to have a bit of bite. Vertere already had a great phono stage on its hands, but this updated version manages to deliver significant performance gains, thanks to some careful housekeeping and honing of the circuit board and power supply. The tidy little box remains the same; an orange power LED is the only addition to the design. If your turntable doesn’t have a built-in phono stage, you’ll need to connect it to a dedicated phono input input on your amp. If you were to plug your turntable directly into the same place, skipping the phono stage, any sound produced would be very reedy, very thin and stupidly quiet. I am not a total audiophile who demands ultra-low noise and distortion, but I would be wishing for this buffer to be more-or-less ‘transparent’.On a car stereo head, which has 4 (line-level) outputs for an amp (FL, FR, RL, RR), I am trying to get another stereo pair, to go into another stereo amp for a third pair of speakers. I am concerned that if I simply take one of the stereo pairs and use passive Y-connectors to get the new pair, each will be quieter, because the power would be shared across two. It might be likely to attach the guitar to the (high-impedance) mic input, however that is commonly way too sensitive for the function, which leads to clipping of the guitar signal too easily. Entry-level products like the Schiit Audio Mani 2, Cambridge Audio Alva Duo, and U-Turn Audio Pluto did their best to not rob music of its pace and keep the sound relatively balanced. In addition, the midband voltage gain of the input stage is adjusted at around 46dB. With that kind of a low input level, it is apparent that low noise transistors (such as the BC109C) are required to get excellent performance.
