For the second team, you’re better off using Volk, Angrax, Rotbone, Maladus, and either Typhus, Aun’shi, or Maugan Ra. The second team is also easy enough to build. You should try and use Re’vas here alongside Aleph-Null, Makhotep, Boss Gulgortz, and any of the other Necrons or Snappa. Morvenn Vahl isn’t a bad choice either.

Commander Shadowsun illuminates one of the major problems with the Tau codex- even the “good” units in it simply don’t function for the most part in 9th Edition, because they are attempting to play a version of the game that no longer exists. 9E is all about scoring, mobility, and resilience, and Shadowsun and her friends simply cannot compete in those arenas in any meaningful way. It isn’t even that she is one-dimensional, as she actually has a wide variety of abilities to support various playstyles, but none of the things she does can be followed through to a successful game plan in most cases, so she ends up being just another disappointing shelf weight. Sneak into the Arks of Omen and cause some big green havoc with Boss Snikrot and his boyz. Boarding Patrol: Orks is a musclebound collection of tough-as-nails fighters led by the legendary Kommando Boss sporting a brand new model. In addition to Snikrot, you’ll board with five Flash Gitz, 10 Beast Snagga Boyz, and 10 Kommandos – who also drag along a reluctant Kommando Grot and far-too-enthusiastic Bomb Squig for the ride.* Boarding Patrol: Aeldari To be fair, I don’t particularly think that the Tyranids can afford to get very aggressive either, as a single monster thrown out unto the teeth of the Custodes will get stabbed to death, but because the attrition here favours them, that doesn’t matter nearly as much. In addition, on this mission in particular they have some powerful options for boosting their Primary in the mid-late game – once you’re deep enough in that you can afford to start throwing Dimachaerons or Harpies into sacrificial situations, you can ObSec one up with Synaptic Imperative and yeet it over to the opponent’s home objective for a sweet 4VP of Primary, making up quite a bit of a score gap even if you’ve been treading water on 6s and 10s most turns. That also forces them to scramble to actually clear it out our risk losing a point in their own turn, which is presumably extremely embarassing for the Custodian Guard. Since Custodes can’t as easily do the same in response, as Bikes aren’t ObSec and getting enough of them onto the Nids home one to out-hold the Swarmlord is going to be rough, you end up with a relative stalemate where the Tyranids have the tools to reliably pull Fire Markerlights (Action): One or more MARKERLIGHT units from your army can start to perform this action at the start of your Movement phase. AIRCRAFT MARKERLIGHT units can perform this action. The action is completed at the start of your next Shooting phase. Like Fire Warrior the novella makes the point of distinguishing between the human and aliens involved with multiple differences and distinguishing traits to differ them from one another. At the same time they’re written to be their own characters as much as possible within the short story. While not featuring the most diverse ensemble of figures despite the setting, with perhaps five in total present, there is a feeling of the book trying to use them to create a layered story within the space allowed.

Following the Damocles Crusade, Aun'va recommended an expedition to rekindle hope and spirit in the empire, which had been dwindling since the bloody war against the Imperium. In the ensuing Farsight Expedition, Farsight led an enormous Tau fleet across the Damocles Gulf, going into frozen stasis to avoid aging during the long trip. [4f] In the ensuing campaign on the far side of the Damocles Gulf, Farsight was initially beaten at every turn by Grog Ironteef, the Ork Warchief of Alsanta. A frustrated O'Shovah nonetheless eventually was able to defeat Grog, and pursued scattered Ork forces to the world of Arthas Moloch. There, Farsight encountered a terrifying new enemy in the form of Chaos Daemons which emerged from a mysterious portal erected on a great Dais. During the battle, all of Farsights accompany Ethereals were killed by gruesome creatures, and Farsight was only able to attain victory thanks to discovering a mysterious blade he used to close the portal, though he was briefly overcome by extreme bloodlust [12]. The experience of battling these foes and gazing into their sinister portal rattled O'Shovah, who realized there were far greater threats than the Ethereal's were telling him. [4g] The first colours are just your conventional base coat, wash, and edge highlight for each of the main armour panels. There are a few colours that deviate a bit, the grey armour and metal get a dry brush instead of an edge highlight and the icons also get a sort of reverse panel lining with white instead of a wash. Phil: When it all comes apart and she’s ravaged by her encounters with Team Nurgle, Shadowsun breaks protocol (gasp!) and makes some very weird allies of her own. Amongst them are the one-Kroot-army that is Opikh Tak, the prissy, fungus-like Charpactin A’haia, and an ursine Nicassar diplomat/combat powerhouse called Ven Tah Regah. Probably the worst part of this story is that it makes Shadowsun not a particularly interesting or impressive character. She shows little respect for her allies or enemies, belittling and underestimating both. She repeatedly walks into traps and makes hasty choices that make her feel more like a rookie than a commander who has already served a long time. And the final battle feels downright insulting. The only thing that really stands out about Shadowsun is her family vs career conflict, as stereotypical as it is. There, she walked into a trap set around House Terryn's ancestral fortress. In the resulting ambush, Kor'sarro Khan wounded Shadowsun grievously, coming within a hand's breadth of decapitating her with his sword. Once more, however, she escaped. The Khan's great oath had yet to be fulfilled, and upon Prefectia, he would pursue it more determinedly than ever.

Playing with Shadowsun

Spared extinction by the gift of Primaris Space Marines from Roboute Guilliman and Belisarius Cawl , the Flesh Tearers have set about doing what they do best – slaying their enemies and claiming worlds for the Imperium. However, in their eagerness, they’ve left their home world isolated. Elsewhere, Shadowsun tasked Swiftflame with engaging the Raven Guard around Ventur Scar. The Sons of Corax were inflicting heavy losses on Air Caste patrols and convoys, gaining the attention of Admiral Skychild. Swiftflame was able to eventually intercept the Raven Guard Gunships, using a single Razorshark as a lure. The ambush worked, and a vicious aerial battle erupted that saw the Raven Guard escape thanks to the arrival of Thunderhawks. Soonafter Swiftflame was forced to withdraw as well and for the next several days the dance of trap and counter-trap continued between the Tau and Raven Guard. [1e] Kor'sarro Khan has brought nearly a score of hunts to a successful conclusion over his years as Master of the Hunt, beginning with his first such victory on the 3rd moon of the gas giant Mai IX. Some of the White Scars' greatest foes, such as the Daemon Prince Kernax Voldorius and the Eldar Corsair Varaliel, had evaded previous Masters of the Hunt only to have their heads severed by Kor'sarro's blade. His other targets have included the Daemon Prince known as Doomrider, and the Chaos Lord Paramyx of the Blighted Claw warband of Chaos Space Marines, who barely escaped with his life during the daemonic invasion of the Agri-world of Gehöft.

She does have the standard Commander rules as well- For the Greater Good (allowing her to fire overwatch for nearby units) and Master of War (allowing a once-per-game aura). She also has the Infiltrator rule that all Stealth Suits get, allowing her to deploy anywhere on the battlefield outside of 12″ of the enemy deployment zone or models. Similarly, she has a Camouflage Field that protects her and her drones, giving the enemy -1 to hit with ranged weapons. Kor'sarro Khan stood amongst the most lauded heroes of the Imperium. As direct and unyielding as a well-forged blade, the Khan is a warrior of violent determination with no time for the niceties of diplomacy or courtly manners. He is a master huntsman whose every thought is bent toward decapitating his oath-sworn prey. Afterwards, a recovering Shadowsun remembered her encounter with T'au'va, beneath Mount Kan'ji on Dal'yth, and how the Goddess had saved her. She then learned of the Death Guard's defeat and that their warships which had entered the Startide Nexus, were now likely trapped within the Warp. All this led Shadowsun to immediately tell the Earth Caste to stop the destruction of T'au'va's temples. [1h] Sources Crisis Shas’vre [50pts]: Plasma Rifle [5pts], Cyclic Ion Blaster [10pts], Early Warning Override, T’au Flamer [5pts] The book tries to make a point of Shadowsun’s duty and role to the Empire but much of the time this is driven towards thoughts of herself and how much of a legacy she might leave upon the world. More than once she effectively daydreams about statues being made in her honour after her death. While this was intended to serve a purpose with her decision in the conclusion, it contradicts the “cog in a machine” mentality and dogma which define the tau and makes many of her remarks seem out of place. The same goes with her talk about the planet’s beauty and of humans, many times they contradict one another or shift on a whim making her look like a hypocrite or sometimes overly petty. While probably intended as character development it isn’t written in a way in which her decisions develop and gradually change.

Battlesuit Upgrades

Moondrakkan - The Assault Bike Moondrakkan was originally commissioned for the 4th Master of the Hunt. This ancient bike is a relic of the White Scars Chapter and has served as a versatile mechanical steed for numerous Masters of the Hunt over many millennia. Fitted with powerful engines, bulletproof tires and a formidable armament, Moondrakkan has been lovingly maintained by the Chapter's Techmarines and have served the Masters of the Hunt well in their neverending quests to chase down their quarry in the midst of a hunt. If you are playing on extremely open boards with a minimum of obscuring/dense terrain, a Shadowsun-based army can potentially have some legs- she still brings a large amount of raw firepower to the table and if you are able to leverage that consistently it is possible to make good use of her. Final Thoughts Commander Shadowsun is the master of the way of the Patient Hunter – clad in her custom Stealth Battlesuit , she lures the enemies of the t’au into inescapable snares and deadly crossfires. But can this peerless commander lay a trap for the Death Guard – and how will she deal with their daemonic patrons, who defy all logic she holds so dear? Today we look at the Supreme Commander of the Tau Empire forces, Commander Shadowsun – and what to do with her in 9th Edition. The khan of the 3 rd Brotherhood has faced many daunting foes and great challenges during his service with the Chapter, including facing an Alpha Level psyker on Delta Arbuthnot where the entire planet's population of Ratling agri-serfs was mind-controlled by the psyker and forced to raise arms against Imperial landowners, using their shovels against guards with autoguns.
