Though it doesn't detract from the overall enjoyment of the book, it sometimes feels as though the author drifts off on a tangent. For example, a chapter that begins by introducing a notoriously haunted house eventually segues to a discussion of Spiritualism, which ultimately leads to an examination of a woman's right to vote. These shifts in narrative are never a point of contention for the reader, because all of the information is well-researched and tied together seamlessly.

You don't have to believe in ghosts to enjoy this book. Here's what the author had to say in the intro: "Even if you don't believe in the paranormal, ghost stories and legends of haunted places are a vital, dynamic means of confronting the past and those who have gone before us. Ultimately, this book is about the relationship between place and story: how the two depend on each other and how they bring each other alive." loc 23, ebook. Once upon a time there was a young prince who believed in all things but three. He did not believe in princesses, he did not believe in islands, he did not believe in God. I loved the characters, wanted to see what happened, was interested in the way everything wove together, and wanted to see what the ultimate showdown was going to be. I loved the writing style. It was casual, easy to understand, gore in all the right places, a sense of humor to ease the sadness and grossness, just everything that really makes a great horror book great.

Unlike what one frequently encounters in memoirs in which writers amazingly and somewhat unbelievably recall all sorts of details and bits of conversation, Parnell takes a totally different approach and readily admits when such details are no longer a part of his recall. This is especially true when he recounts information about the scarring tragedies which strike his immediate family. For as long as I can remember, I have always been fascinated with ghost stories. Then to see that this book hooked stories of ghosts with American history, I was ready to engrossed with this book. And I'm thinking 'expound on this further'. White people don't think they did anything wrong and the South is full of people who still believe the North is a vile place. I just got into an argument with a Southerner over how he felt Lincoln was worse than Hitler.

What comes to be known as the "Ghostland Disaster" is just the beginning for Ben and Lilian. His spirit finally set free, Rex Garrote declares war against the living. He'll use the psychic trauma of the Ghostland mass murder to tear open a dimension between the mortal and ethereal worlds known as the Dark Rift, and unleash its legion of nightmare creatures upon anyone who refuses to kneel before him. But as always with Mr. Ralston’s work, the real joy is in the characters. A dad who’s the king of corny dad jokes, a Scottish ghost who finds great joy in his disembodied (heh. Again, read the book, you’ll see why that’s clever) state, a gambling addict in love with a psychic, and so, so many more.

The chapters are divided by different famous ghost stories and the author proceeds to debunk them all. In that vein, there really is only so much of a 'people capitalizing on someone's tragedy for fun', 'smearing an innocent person's name', or 'no proof of said event ever happened' refrain that is repeated before the reading gets dull. I think if it had been edited more for the stupid people, *cough, cough, ME* then I would have enjoyed this book more.
