After Toriel leaves the protagonist to run some errands, friendly Froggits begin to appear in the overworld. They can speak to the protagonist (their ribbits are presumably translated), and many of them impart basic and important game information, such as how to put the game into full-screen mode. The first friendly Froggit appears in the room immediately after the one where Toriel left the protagonist and gives advice on how to deal with monster encounters, encouraging the protagonist to show mercy if their opponents do not wish to fight. This Froggit does not appear if any monster is killed. The second save point in Hotland. It's the area where you first encounter steam hoppers, and the scripted Tsunderplane encounter.

Maynard considered Froggitt's interest in reading The Times an important part of the character, explaining "I wanted him to be intelligent, always anxious to improve himself. The easy route would've been to use old clichés, like malapropisms and spoonerisms, but that would have made the character too one-dimensional. By getting him to read The Times and be an ardent student of dynamic word power, we gave him the breadth to spread the comedy over a wide range of subjects. We wanted people to laugh with him, not at him". Whimsun can be spared from the start, though no GOLD is earned by doing so. It runs away if the protagonist consoles it, which also earns no GOLD. Upon being followed, Toriel tells the protagonist that if they leave the Ruins, Asgore will kill them, and urges them to return. However, the protagonist continues to pursue Toriel, eventually having to fight Toriel to leave the Ruins.

As part of a Pacifist playthrough, you must not kill anything, instead winning random encounters through non-combative actions..
