Michael is good at using his imagination thats why I like his books but out of all the books he's written The Butterfly lion is the best.

He was a loving, kind and gentle creature although he was a lion and he was an extremely beautiful animal. It always deals with the issue of loneliness, no doubt experienced by many children, especially those who are enduring life at a boarding school where they might be a relative outsider.

Michael Morpurgo appeared on the map for me after I first saw the movie and then read the book War Horse. One night Bertie promised the lion that he would never leave him, but his promise was hard to keep when his parents insisted that he went to England to boarding school. A lyrical and moving tale of a young boy growing up in Africa, and his lifelong friendship with a white lion. There are so many benefits from listening to a story in any format, from developing listening skills and quite concentration to fostering imagination and visualization techniques. However, the story's darker elements are counterbalanced by a wonderful power of hope and the final part provides a twist that few readers are likely to anticipate.I can see why they opted to also tell this story on stage, it has all the hallmarks of a great story that appeals to people of all ages. Morpurgo is really good at telling stories of friendships between children and animals, often while also telling of war. I would recommend it as a class 'story time' book for years 2 and 3, and as a reading for pleasure book for years 4-6. It tells the story of a boy who runs away from school and meets an old lady who tells him the story of her husband and his pet lion cub. Millie, who has become a nurse in the hopes of finding Bertie, reads about him in a newspaper and the two are reunited.

He fought as a soldier, but became a real hero for keeping a special promise and for saving the lion from a life in a cage. Morpurgo does not tend to shy away from life's truths, including sadness, loss and grief; therefore, one always has a sense of apprehension as to what might happen next to the main protagonists. It employs an unusual structure of being told but this doesn't distract from the power of the words. The hint at the depression of Bertie's mum is explored through a child's eyes, seeing his mum unhappy, inactive and experiencing mood swings.Years later and now a soldier in France during WWI, he sees a poster for a circus with a white lion on it and he succeeds in tracking him down. Yes he does and the adventure continues, a heartwarming tale which jumps from the present to the past effortlessly. Michael Morpurgo describes his characters' emotions very well which makes the story really come to life. He has written more than 100 books and has won the Smarties Prize, the Whitbread Award, and most recently the Blue Peter Book Award for PRIVATE PEACEFUL. It is, perhaps, my favourite Morpurgo which covers much the same familiar territory over which he often flys.
