The Fuji XF 35mm f/2 R WR is optically very good, and there are no better-made lenses from the Orient today. Even Sony's much more expensive made-in-Thailand Zeiss lenses are merely thin metal vanity shells over plastic, and nowhere near as well made as this Fujinon lens. The lens hood for the XF 35mm f/2 is so small that it almost seems useless. I’ve shot with and without it and haven’t noticed much of a difference in harsh lighting situations with directional sunlight. It does offer protection to the front element though, so it’s nice to have in crowds or while hiking. The 35mm focal length of the XF 35mm f/2 provides a 44.2° field of view, and a full frame equivalent 53mm field of view. The minimum focusing distance is around 14 inches or 35cm. Combine that with a 0.135x magnification ratio, and you won’t be doing much macro, but it is a very capable lens for detail shots of objects close to the front element.

i don’t understand why we don’t finally change this whole 35mm lens (50mm 35mm or so equiv.) to the 23mm on 4/3 to be the new normal lens!! Other standout highlights include an iris diaphragm with nine rounded blades, a stepping motor autofocus system with an internal focusing design, and an optical formula that comprises 9 elements in 6 groups, including 2 aspherical elements. The all-metal filter ring is a pleasant surprise compared to the plastic rubbish from other brands.

The Fuji 35mm f/2 is a very well made little lens that's ideal for use as your main lens on any Fuji X-series camera with interchangeable lenses. The images below are showing the bottom left corner of a topo map. Shooting wide open at f/2, the corners and edges are soft. By f/4, things get a little better, and by f/5.6 the softness is relegated to the extreme corners. The centers are very sharp here and that sharpness works its way all the way out to the edges of the image. Since it is only the extreme corners that appear soft, I assume this might have something to do with the built in lens profile that corrects for vignetting. Because X cameras are all APSC sensors the 35mm has an effective focal length of 52.5mm, so this is essentially a nifty fifty f2. By default then it’s great for portraits and all around shooting, and the Bokeh at this focal length at the maximum aperture of f2 is really nice. Fuji 35mm f2 review sample image The lens has a nice 9 blade rounded aperture. This gives the bokeh some character but I’ve also noticed some interesting shape throughout the whole range of the lens. It also features weather-sealing and a very solid build, plus the new microprocessor for faster autofocus.

The AF+MF switch on the lens enables seamless manual focusing. Half depress the shutter to autofocus on the subject and then fine adjustments can then be made using the manual focus ring. That is why this looks way better with the hood on. This comes with the lens and also protects the front lens element. If you ask me it just looks weird when you have a larger camera, and a lens that gets smaller as you reach the front. You can go ahead and call me vain. Lens quality An inner focusing system, which moves the small and lightweight lens elements, is combined with a stepping motor to produce quiet, accurate and fast autofocus - a must for all snap shooters that need to capture a spontaneous moment. The Fujifilm XF 35mm f/2 pairs very well with the face recognition mode on my Fuji X-T3. When shooting spontaneous street portraits, I don’t always have time to set a focus point, so this feature is critical. I also like to isolate my subject on the street by shooting close to the maximum aperture of my lens and not around f/8 with everything in focus like some street photographers. While the lens is actually a 35mm lens, it performs more like a traditional 50mm because of the APS-C crop. This is considered to be a normal field of view and is often compared to how the human eye sees the world. We also can find a nice coating, the Super EBC. Although I haven’t noticed much of a difference between the Super and the HT-EBC lens coating found on some of the other lenses. Perhaps it’s easier to keep clean and it repels more dust and water? Thanks to the IF mechanism the front of the lens does not rotate on focus, which is very good news for anyone looking to use the lens in conjunction with a polariser or graduated neutral density filter.

The lens produces excellent sharpness in the centre of the frame wide open at f/2, and continues to get sharper when the aperture is closed down by a few stops. There’s a jump in sharpness by stopping the lens down to f/2.8 and the centre of the frame remains consistently sharp up to f/8. The sweet spot of edge-to-edge sharpness is found at f/5.6 and it’s only when you begin to push beyond f/8 to f/11 and f/16 that diffraction gradually starts to have an affect on the level of sharpness. Shading This lens is weather-resistant, dust-resistant and can operate down to -10°C. This means that you can use this lens without worrying about the functionality of the lens itself. This ultimately means that you are not limited in where you can take this lens and take your photographs. The wide angle and bright aperture makes it great for low light situations such as gig photography and weddings. What's in the box?

On the Fujifilm XT2 diffraction becomes apparent at around f8, but it’s not until about f11 that we see significant resolution loss. If you were shooting with one of Fujifilm’s 16MP cameras you will not notice the diffraction as much and as the pixels are much larger.Crop from above image at 100%. If this is about 6" (15cm) on your screen, printing the complete image at this same high magnification would result in a 40 x 60" (100 x 150 cm) print!
