The colour scheme is problematic for a number of reasons, with the film looking darker than it was theatrically and thus making Dolby Vision work overtime to pull the shadow detail to the fore. This mostly works, but it's still not quite perfect - when it really should be - and even the peak whites struggle in some of the scenes to avoid being fully overblown. Grain gives the feature a suitably filmic texture, but also won't please viewers who like their features to look very glossy and 'clean'. And, unfortunately, also doesn't quite marry up during the IMAX scenes, which are flawless. The disc presents a native 3840 x 2160p resolution image utilising the film's original theatrical aspect ratio of widescreen 2.4:1 for the majority of the feature, but switching aspect ratios during the aerial sequences. It uses 10-bit video depth, a Wide Colour Gamut (WCG) and High Dynamic Range (HDR), as well as Dolby Vision, and is encoded using the HEVC (H.265) codec.

This is a great looking SteelBook, and the entire collection looks wonderful. For fans, this individual SteelBook as part of the larger six volume set is The climax of the scene (looking very film noir) sets the whole premise of the film in which Ethan Hunt must disappear to avoid being condemned as a mole after his entire IMF team is assassinated. The Equipment sunrise at 39:54 -- and large color swaths are handled with great care and attention to tonal detail. Green plants at a gala early in the film stand nicely As you would perhaps only expect from a Woo Hollywood production, this is a really vibrant film, and the colour enhancements here only make it even more eye-burningly spectacular, bringing added depth to almost every single tone, and making the palette positively pop.

Detail laps up the weathered prison setting for the opening sequence, Cruise's ageing but still phenomenal physique, strands of hair and fine precision details on facial close-ups. The high-tech railway car, the underwater escape, and the entire Dubai sequence - not least the scaling of the Burj which is amidst one of the most spectacular-looking scenes ever to grace the format - it's all fantastic material which the 4K rendition delivers with skill. The 12-bit Dolby Vision colors are a great improvement over the Blu-ray as well. There are several featurettes and photo gallery but man, hard to watch that video quality after seeing the feature film in Ultra HD.
