Nosing Johnnie Walker Double Black next to Johnnie Walker Black, there are very clear and distinct differences. A lot of the fruity notes have dissipated, leaving behind just the typical notes of a scotch whisky: malted barley (aka sourdough bread and honey) and a bit of peat smoke. Long and rewarding balanced between fruity sweetness, smoke, citrus peel, vanilla and warming pepper spice.However, there seems to be more caramel (toffee, sweet), nose and palette, which I don't like personally. You definitely won’t be mistaking this for an Islay scotch anytime soon, but it has some of those characteristics coming along for the ride combined with a fruity and rich flavor profile. Black Label is aged the way all standard Scotch whiskies- matured for not less than three years in oak casks [ 1 ]. The strong point of the Black Label is the fact that it is more approachable, easy drinking and smooth with rich peat. Whereas Black Label expresses the interplay between sweet and oak, Double Black expresses the interplay with smoke, sweet, and spice. That sweet dark fruit and smoke flavor lingers long into the aftertaste and proves to be a welcome companion as you continue to sip and enjoy your evening. In gaining this noticeable intensity in terms of both smokiness and richness, Double Black sacrifices its age statement. Another noticeable difference between the two spirits is the tasting notes of the whiskies because Black Label is an easy-drinking whisky, and it has subtle peat.

The central malt and grain components are generally the same as Black Label, as one would expect with the identity of the two whiskies intentionally intertwined. On the contrary, Double Black has notes of medicinal creosote peat, leather, malt, barrel char, rich peaty smoke, raisins, iodine, and earthy notes. She used to work as a bar manager in Paris and is a self-taught mixologist whose passion for crafting unique cocktails led her to create Liquor Laboratory. Served on the rocks or "straight up" in a cocktail glass, a Rob Roy comprises of Scotch whiskey, sweet vermouth, and a dash of bitters stirred over ice.

Black Label has more fruity-tasting notes and is slightly spicier, while Double Black is bolder, more luxurious, and more vibrant.
