I’m not entirely sure myself, but here’s a couple of ways they could be doing it. First, it is theoretically possible that they are measuring the proof of each barrel and blending together the batches using some insanely precise math calculation. Whiskybase B.V. When you take your first sip of Rare Breed Rye, you’ll notice its bold and intricate profile. The initial sweetness brings to mind citrusy hints of lemon, pineapple and orange, as well as vanilla, toffee and licorice.

I was left with a bit of a dilemma after tasting my old Wild Turkey, and it was an itch that I knew I’d have to scratch sooner rather than later. The only way I was going to find out how much my old WIld Turkey bottling had deteriorated was either to take a measurement of the abv or simply just buy an up to date bottling of Wild Turkey Rare Breed. Let’s face it, I didn’t really need an excuse to buy another bottle of whisky, although I was wondering what I was going to do with another bottle of bourbon when nowadays my focus is myopically set to Scotch. But as an old boss of mine was fond of saying “Don’t give me pain, just give me the babies”, I knew that I had to get myself into finding solutions to the problem rather than worrying about the pain it may cause in the future. As for the expression itself, I’d love to see a true return to form. Yes, Rare Breed batch 116.8 is notably better than batch 112.8– equivalent to latter batches of 03RB in quality as well. Yet Rare Breed could still be much better. How’s that you ask? Easy – take a look at W. B. Saffell. Why can’t we have that as an annual Rare Breed batch? I think I’ve said enough right there.Wild Turkey Rare Breed is a delightful match for desserts boasting caramel or vanilla undertones. The dessert’s sweetness finds its counter in the rye’s spiciness, and its rich depth enhances the whiskey’s bold character. Availability For all of the sweet and creamy aspects of this bourbon up until this point, I do detect the tiniest bit of astringency. It’s still very well done though and there’s a ton to like about it. Score: 9.1/10 But the sands of time have a way of eroding all kinds of stubbornness. Warm and inviting it’s much heavier on flavor than alcohol burn which makes it a fantastic sipping bourbon. Wild Turkey’s barrel entry proof is lower than the more common legal maximum of 125, with distillate entering barrels from 107 - 115 proof. It’s also well known that Jimmy Russell likes bourbon in the 8-12 year old range. While bourbon can increase or decrease in proof as it ages, this puts a lower cap on overall proof compared to many other bourbons in the marketplace. On top of that, Wild Turkey offers a lot of their products at a higher proofpoint than normal, with their flagship Wild Turkey 101 coming in at a high proof relative to the competition at the same price point. Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel hits the 110 proofpoint, just a few shy of Rare Breed. As for age, Russell’s Reserve 10 Year lands right in the midst of the 6, 8, and 12 year old blend that makes up Rare Breed. There are other Wild Turkey products of course, but the point is it’s very easy to draw similarities from one to the next. was easily the best of the RB in my opinion and 03 wasn't far behind it. That said, the modern batches that continue to roll out demonstrate a pretty considerable value, and no shortage of flavor. The only caveat? You need plenty of airtime. Blending: After aging, the whiskey is then blended together in small batches to create the final product. This blending process helps to ensure that each bottle of Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye has a consistent flavor and aroma profile. Fermentation: Once the mash bill has been created, it is then fermented using a proprietary strain of yeast. That will bring out the flavors and aromas of the grains, turning things rich and layered.The overall flavor profile isn’t supposed to suffer because of it, but many whiskey drinkers will claim there is a difference in taste, myself included. Whatever your opinion is, there was a large celebration when Rare Breed Rye specs were published and enthusiasts saw a big fat “NCF” in the description Whiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. This was the case when Wild Turkey released the rye whiskey version of Rare Breed in 2020. Up until then, the only way to get Wild Turkey rye whiskey was to buy a bottle of Wild Turkey 81 or 101 and Russell’s Reserve Rye Whiskey Single Barrels.
