DEAF ANGEL: More kids sneak into a wrestling arena to try and get a glimpse of eponymous masked wrester. KIDS' GHOST STORY about an old house recently moved into by a family who then experience poltergeist activity soon after. Catherine Butler talks about how Garner is “ careful to integrate his fiction with the physical reality beyond the page” but here it’s woven with a sense of escalating dread that scared me more than half of Lawrence Gordon Clark’s Ghost Stories for Christmas (and I love those) and director John Woods deserves huge credit for the inventive camera work .

Deaf Angel begins to turn and just as we begin to see something horrible we cut to the kid in his hiding place, looking. According to the chronicler Ralph of Coggeshall, a naked wild man, covered in hair, was caught in the nets of local fishermen. The couple decide to stake out the lodge, hoping for a ghost sighting but get a lot more than they could ever have expected as the true evil luring in the Lodge makes itself felt. As usual, I would like to extend a heart-felt thank you to Network for taking the trouble to licence and master these marginal interest pieces.

The Keeper', written by Alan Garner, was the final episode of the original 'Spooky' series of the long running Dramarama series, an anthology show for children. If you want something a little darker for children I recomend Shadows Series 1 (Series 2 is awful) Children of the Stones and King of the Castle.

Although I found some stories to be better than others, overall this is an entertaining collection, a series intended for children maybe, but with plenty for adults to enjoy as well. Spooky aired shortly before the main series was broadcast, exploring the supernatural vein that would appear throughout Dramarama's run.The series was the brainchild of the head of children’s drama at TVS, Anna Home who had left the BBC in 1981 where, amongst her many achievements, she had produced children’s cult favourite The Changes (1975) and helped develop Grange Hill (1978-2008). There’s nothing in the dark that isn’t there during the day,’ Elizabeth drones menacingly, doing her best to make comfort as unsettling as possible. Ghosthunters Peter (Tim Woodward) and Sally (Janet Maw) spend an evening in a haunted shack, wracked by the furrowed sexual tension between them – ‘When I said I’d come with you, I expected a little more of a run for my money’ – before being eventually sent over the edge of reason into insanity by twanging string instruments, weird mutterings and a game of Scrabble that leads to a poem straight out of Edgar Allan Poe.
