However, the process for writing this book was clearly different and the stylistic differences made it a thoroughly enjoyable read. The story is of Raymond Du Guise, who in 1940 is home from the war for a spell having injured himself. He has just married his sweetheart, hotel chambermaid Nancy but he feels it is his duty to fight for his country and enlist. He served as a captain and from series 2 was the host on the UK version of Hole in the Wall, which premiered on 20 September 2008 on BBC One. There are several different threads to this story, which are all pulled seamlessly together, making it a really enjoyable read.

The contrast between the glamour of the hotel and the not so glamour of the war was obvious, one is full of beauty and grandeur, one full of horrifying moments and dreams of better times. I loved this one so much, I immediately went out and bought the one set before this and am making my mission to get all the others in this series too! Du Beke has also reprised his partnerships with Lesley Garret and Ann Widdecombe for the 2004 and 2018 Christmas specials, respectively.

I read this on Pigeonhole without having read the previous books and didn’t find that to be a problem at all, it works as a standalone story. In Week nine, Du Beke received his first 10s in all seventeen series for their American Smooth; the couple received a total of fifteen 10s during the series. There are some beautifully observed scenes depicting Ray,Artie and Billy’s struggles to reach home shores which really pack an emotional punch. Anton is one of the most instantly recognisable TV personalities today, best known for his role on the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing , which he has featured on since its inception in 2004.

As it was set during World War II and was partly featured within the book, I did find some parts really emotional. The mentality of soldiering on and making the best of things no matter how dire they become is evident in the way all these characters conduct themselves.
