In 2010, Jason starred in a made-for-TV movie Come Rain Come Shine with Alison Steadman for ITV about an elderly Millwall supporter. The backdrop to his time in office included the advent of ISIS, surging migration and a rapidly changing EU. I do believe this man is one of the comedic backbones of English humour, alongside greats such as Michael Plain, John Cleese, Ronnie Barker.

David Jason: My Life On Screen is a revealing and highly personal series in which Sir David visits locations as far apart as London, Yorkshire and the Kent countryside to explore how some of his greatest roles came about - from Pop Larkin in The Darling Buds Of May and DCI Jack Frost in A Touch of Frost, to Del Boy Trotter in Only Fools And Horses. It was read very well, it didn't take long to get into it not being David who read the whole story, but it was so nice to have David Jason read the first part of the book. Autobiographies can sometimes spend a long time talking about life 'pre-fame' without really giving any insight, but I felt this book grabbed my attention. For the first time, Andrew Ridgeley - one half of one of the most famous bands in the world - tells the inside story of Wham! I like a biography, I seem to read enough of them lately, so this one seemed like it would provide a little amusement.Upon receiving the knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace on 1 December 2005, he said he was "humbled" by the "fantastic tribute". The book is so easy to read and the dreaded actor ego does not rear its ugly head fortunately although you can argue that just writing a book about yourself is ego enough. As someone who was born in the early 80's I've grown up seeing him in some of the most popular TV series. Through a natural talent for making people laugh, found himself working with the leading lights of British comedy in the 1960s and ’70s: Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Bob Monkhouse and Ronnie Barker. Michael Fenton-Stevens makes a very professional job of the reading, putting a lot of humour into the anecdotes and doing a few voices sparingly, so that it doesn't distract from the text.

Overall it was an interesting book and I found his descriptions of the technical aspects of stage and television acting fascinating. I struggled a little with his writing style, but warmed to it after the first few chapters and enjoyed the book a lot. I found myself having to pause the audio at a few spots because I couldn't hear the reading over my laughter. His acting career has been long and varied: from his theatre work in the West End to providing voices for Mr Toad from The Wind in the Willows, Danger Mouse and The BFG; and from Open All Hours and The Darling Buds of May to his starring roles as Detective Inspector Frost in A Touch of Frost and, of course, Derek 'Del Boy' Trotter in Only Fools and Horses. episodes; A revival of the original series, featuring original cast members Lynda Baron and Maggie Ollerenshaw.In 1968, Jason was initially cast in the role of Lance Corporal Jones in the Jimmy Perry and David Croft BBC comedy Dad's Army. Quite a chunk of the book is taken up by David’s early years and whilst I found these interesting, I do believe he could have either cut them down a little or added some more depth to stories of his later life. I’ve always been a big fan of David Jason – I was brought up on his shows and have watched pretty much every episode of Only Fools and Horses, Porridge and Open All Hours plus many others of the shows he’s been in.

David’s is a touching, funny and warm-hearted story, which charts the course of his incredible five decades at the top of the entertainment business. Although he had no theatrical training, he obviously had a natural ability which he is very modest about. His stories before he decided to become an actor, learning various trades, resulted in some great stories. Had me laughing when mentioned had nailed leonard's shoes to the floor as a joke in the dressing room and moved at many parts especially hearing the poetry from the first 'guvner' Ronnie Barker, before he was given the same fond title when Ronnie retired. Barker would become a mentor to David, leading to hugely successful stints in Porridge and Open All Hours.As presenter of Radio 4's Today, the nation's most popular news programme, he is famed for his tough interviewing, his deep misgivings about authority in its many forms, and his passionate commitment to a variety of causes. I rarely watch television or visit the cinema and I’m not remotely interested in celebrity lifestyle so when My Life by David Jason was chosen for the U3A book group to which I belong my heart sank.
