She is expected to start working on her next novel soon and release it for her fans to read and cherish. I found that I’m not sure who is related or friends with each other, right the way through I was trying to work it out.

Were the kids taken out there as punishment/a means for control and just left out there or were they forced to carve the miniature reaper rocks?

Maybe, but the sasquatches whom the volcano displaced contributed to the statistics, too, if only out of self-defense.

The author’s punchy, purple diction used to convey the characters’ emotion doesn’t help – in every scene somebody’s stomach is “tightening,” “flipping,” “lurching. The setting is starkly chilling, the characters are smart and vulnerable, and as you turn the pages, the slow creep of claustrophobia sets in. And she was the central character in If It Bleeds, a novella in the 2020 collection of the same name. She also wonders if the cases are connected, why the perpetrator started up again after so many years.

Hana is convinced that Jo is hiding something and asks her about the “I’m sorry” note that fell out of her bag when they arrived. Brooks is a pro at building suspense even if it plays out in some rather spectacularly yucky episodes, one involving a short spear that takes its name from “the sucking sound of pulling it out of the dead man’s heart and lungs. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

This is equal parts creepy, suspenseful and gruesome—everything you could want in a novel for this genre. She says Caleb/Chris was the camp leader when she and Will were on the island but she didn’t recognize him. Tom comes to tell them he saw a man running across the bridge to the islet (where the isolated villa is). Only Elin the detective and main POV seems worthy of the reader’s attention, but her lack of self esteem doesn’t seem believable – like her relationship with Will.
