While many elements of these documentaries are generally covered elsewhere on the two included documentaries, it would have been nice to see the complete collection. This package also includes a DVD copy of the film (though missing the documentary The Shark is Still Working) as well as code for either a standard digital copy or Ultraviolet streaming option, none of which I looked at. Overall, colour is a mix of dazzling and rich with the odd bit of bleakness thrown in for good measure. Again, it falls short of reference due to it's age, but there are some incredible moments of sheer brilliance that are not lost to new and impressive DSP chains effecting them.

As the packaging and the advertising has pointed out we get an entirely new restoration and transfer for this Blu-ray edition, approved by Spielberg. Theres a lot of behind the scenes footage, and discussion about Spielberg being so young and relatively unknown. All the nasty noise has been brought under control, and all of the hiccups with previous versions of the film have been rectified.On a cinematic scale, Spielberg's film is a defining moment in the history of motion pictures, unexpectedly inaugurating the summer blockbuster approach to filmmaking which obviously still continues today. Despite it’s rather simple nature and leisured pace, which I welcome more than a lot of the modern day quick cut ones you get on many big studio releases now, it’s easily one of the most informative and engaging docs of its type and actually almost proves more fascinating than the finished product in some respects. It does mean that shadows during these scenes are extremely prominent and doesn't feature a hell of a lot of detail really. I'm not going to shame myself with exact details here, but suffice to say, the dialogue is crispy and crystal clear.

Next we then get the classic making of documentary, The Making of Jaws, which had originally been released on the Signature Series laserdisc and various DVD editions (though an early one had cut it down severely. The images are crisp on this baby now, I noticed things I had never noticed before and I loved that fact, the colours are glorious, the night time water shots are stunning, the blue skies oh so blue, the aqua waters crystal, the sheen of sweat on skin so clear you can see the pores on Chief Brody forehead, all of it wonderfully upgraded. Rather than simply making new foley effects, they singled the sounds from the original design, cleaned them up and repurposed them, expanding the soundfield into a wonderfully immersive aural experience. The first thing you're gonna notice about this absolutely fantastic DTS-HD Master audio track is that it's one of the few that is delivered exploiting the full range of the formats capabilities. Despite Police Chief Brody’s warnings of a killer shark, Mayor Larry Vaughn still refuses to close the beaches and lose the revenue of tourist dollars during the island’s high season.Pretty standard stuff showing some of the difficulties on the set (all covered in the other documentaries) but I found it a nice addition simply for Spielberg’s conversation about his film The Sugarland Express. Diving into the bonus features, there's a quick 8-minute featurette about the restoration project (seen below) which revealed why these issues were present. Even some celebrities and movie makers such as Kevin Smith and Robert Rodriguez offer opinions on the movie and how it's problems being so well documented has paved a way forward for their own productions. There are also a couple of outtakes, one involving a prop gun that won’t fire and another around a character’s death scene.

Although studios didn't put an end to the era right away, the shark undeniably had enough of bite to be seen as the beginning of studios refocusing their attention elsewhere. Once upon a time, the sequel rule stated that all subsequent films would be worse than the original, but the Jaws sequels created a whole new continuum of badness that transcended the simple linear decline of the sequel rule. The ocean scenes have had a rebalancing of the sky tone, lending it a more grey and flat colour as the director had originally intended.
