Whilst the ending does apparently link back to the author’s first book I found it worked fine as a stand-alone but it is ripe for continuation and if the prose is of this quality then I’m definitely keen for more! This is another biography and I liked it so much because it shed light on the inner life of an American hero: Aviator Charles Lindbergh.

To each their own, then, but it’s good that something like this exists if it may help someone who has suffered sexual abuse as a child better process their feelings. Although his DNA is present at the scene of the crime and blood is found in his car 70 miles away there is no DNA underneath her fingernails indicating a close struggle. Then there are the albums and songs that reveal the genius of an artist whose lyrics draw on centuries of American culture but who refuses to be shackled to his own past. Now it's years later, and her life all but ruined ( well, middle class) the man's daughter infiltrates his world and finds him fairly easily. The premise sounded intriguing but an uneven writing style, poorly developed characters and a confusing tone made this a dud. The young Benson is catapulted 30 years into the future and his “father” is an older version of himself: a successful comic book illustrator whose work has been turned into movies, and who is now teaching at a nearby college. At the age of 34, she is still trying to find out what happened to her father and hopes to bring him to justice, though there still is some doubt as to whether he actually did the crime.

This novel, therefore, should be read and reread not as a novelty or a token—a woman’s work in a still overwhelmingly male canon—but as a daring and sophisticated work of nineteenth century Russian prose. Once banished from the literary canon, this new release of her only novel includes both her prose and poetry that offer astute observations of Russian society. Read the book and watch the brilliant Anthony Minghella’s eponymous film starring Matt Damon as Ripley. In the end neither part quite works: the thoughtful part sinks beneath the unconvincing and unbelievable; the thriller part fails to thrill.Claire’s father is a privileged man: handsome, brilliant, the product of an aristocratic lineage and an expensive education, surrounded by a group of devoted friends who would do anything for him.
