Finally, think about where you’re going to use it. Most mitre saws can be mounted to a workbench, but others have their own stand. The choice you make will be governed by how and where you’ll use it. Fix your timbers in place, ensuring that the joints are butted together as well as possible, but the timber itself is fixed in it’s correct position. If you are planning on painting your architrave or mitred timbers then it’s still possible to get a great looking finish. For the purposes of this DIY guide we’re going to be cutting mitres for a piece of architrave to go around a doorway.

Cutting a Mitre Joint Using a Mitre Block

One of the most important factors that will determine how accurate and successfully your joint is, as with many other DIY jobs, is your initial measuring and marking out.

With each position of the fence, make both cuts; flat cut first, followed by vertical cut. Make the final passes very light ones, to give the best possible finish.
