Description

Some actions have a cost indicated in the action symbol. This cost must be paid when the Engineer is placed together with any extra fee for spaces with a red outline. You must have all the required Credits to be able to place your Engineer in a given space. Place the required Engineers in an available action space of your choosing on the Management board, and immediately perform the action corresponding to that space. Take the first corresponding structure piece from the left of your Company Board and place it in one corresponding available building space on the Map (if you are building an Elevation, place it over one of your existing Dams).

Barrage is a resource management strategic game in which players compete to build their majestic dams, raise them to increase their storing capacity, and deliver all the potential power through pressure tunnels connected to the energy turbines of their powerhouses. Actions: Take turns placing workers and taking actions until all players have placed all 12 of their workers.

You can build 4 types of structures. Each structure has a different function and a different cost. The Base Final Score: 4.5 Stars – Barrage provides a plethora of interactive decisions that will feel different with each play. Probably the most significant actions are the ones which allow the players to generate energy. There are five pairs of these, with each pair providing a different bonus or penalty to the amount of energy produced (naturally, ones with the highest bonuses are chosen first). When a player chooses one of these, she selects one of her dams that has one or more water drops behind it and routes the drops through a co-located conduit to one of her powerhouses. The re-routed water drops then flow downhill until they are either stopped by a dam or exit the board. The conduit used doesn’t have to be owned by the active player—if it’s owned by an opponent, the active player must pay them some money for its use and the opponent also receives some VPs. Each conduit has a production value; these values range from 1 to 5. The amount of energy produced is equal to the number of drops moved through the conduit, multiplied by the conduit’s production value, modified by the action’s bonus or penalty, along with any other bonuses the player might have earned. Obviously, conduits with a high production value can yield much higher energy amounts, but they’re also much more expensive to build. Barrage is a game of long-term planning. Resources (particularly from the start) are hard to come by, so many of the initial decisions made dictate whether or not you’ll perform well once final scoring is tallied. Most of the time, you’ll spend the first actions getting a building out, but if you build to where you can’t afford the other essential buildings to produce energy, then you’re not doing much for yourself. The contracts players can select, as well as the worker placement spots where actions are chosen. The spaces are also grouped into seven different areas, each of which provides similar things, but with different rewards and costs. For example, there are three different pairs of spaces which let the player add more machinery tokens to their supply, with the more expensive spaces yielding more and better machines. Thus, even though there are a lot of publicly available action spaces, they are organized in easily understood groups.

Your turn ends once you have performed an action. If it's your turn and you don't have Engineers left in your supply, you must pass.

Patent Office: Place 2 Engineers and pay 5 Credits, and choose 1 of the available Advanced Technology Tiles. These For the introductory game assign the Company boards and Executive Officer tiles to the players according to the table below. Place each Executive Officer tile on the left of the associated Company board. An expansion has already been released, which is called The Leeghwater Project. It provides a fifth company, from the Netherlands, although the maximum number of players remains at 4. It also adds a few new action boards and some very interesting extra actions the players can use. I’m not the biggest fan of expansions, but this looks promising, as it doesn’t drastically change the game, but just supplements it. I haven’t had the chance to try it yet, but several of my gaming buddies have and they’re very high on it and feel it’s the best way to play the game.

Afterwards, the water flows downstream past your Powerhouse, stopped by a Place the Map in the center of the table. The side with no icons is recommended once you have mastered the game. It is always built over a Base or another Elevation belonging to your color (there aren't building spaces with the Elevation icon). Excavators and Concrete Mixers are unusual resources. When you use them to build a structure they are not 'spent' forever: they are invested for a certain amount of time on the Construction Wheel until they will be available again after a complete rotation.

The Management board is shared by all the players, meaning that players are in competition with one another to occupy the action spaces: the first player to place Engineers in an action space makes this space unavailable for all the other players for the entire round (except for the Bank). Water Management: Place 1-2 Engineers to place 1-2 Water on any Headstream(s), to be released during the Water Phase, or place 1 Water on any Headstream, which is then immediately released downstream.If you are the first player according to the request, you will score 15 VPs. And that would be a terrible shame, because the gameplay really is fantastic. I’m deeply in love with it and it’s probably been four years or so since I’ve been this excited about a design. It’s still early days (I’ve only played it 3 times), but right now, it’s clearly my Game of the Year and if another title manages to unseat it, then 2019 will have been a fantastic year. If you used an opponent’s Conduit (the only time you can use an opponent’s piece), you must pay them 1 Credit
