The plot goes like this – couple with children move into old mansion with a history, father gets possessed by ghost of crazy old owner, mother discovers an underground altar, kids run about and scream, an ‘expert’ comes to visit and sees something terrible, big chase and if you’ve seen The Amityville Horror then you’ve seen the final 10 minutes of this. I went to the owners of the house and I said ‘Is it possible there’s a woman in white?’ And they said: ‘A woman in white, yeah. We haven’t seen her for a year or two but she appears in that one room.’ Interestingly enough in our film we also had a woman in white, and for our real woman in white, our wardrobe designer had actually hand-stitched her white gown. The Turn of the Screw– 1999 – Based on the horror story by Henry James, this film follows a governess who looks after two children at a remote estate and becomes convinced the home is haunted. The 1999 adaptation features Colin Firth and Pam Ferris. BritBox. There's a vial of some liquid, a bizarre red potion, blood here and there, a mysteriously ringing telephone, and some google research. The jump scares are not effective (no fridge door!), and at no point do you fear for the female characters. It's a mess.

Williams did fine in her role, and even Modine did the best he could with what he was given (his character was the biggest mess in the mix, with some truly uncomfortable scenes - and not in a horror/mystery sort of way). All four of the inhabitants begin to experience strange events while in the house, including unseen noises and ghosts roaming the halls at night, strange writing on the walls, and other unexplained events. Eleanor tends to experience phenomena to which the others are oblivious. At the same time, Eleanor may be losing touch with reality, and it is implied that at least some of what Eleanor witnesses may be products of her imagination. Another implied possibility is that Eleanor possesses a subconscious telekinetic ability that is itself the cause of many of the disturbances experienced by her and the others, which might indicate there is no ghost in the house at all. This possibility is suggested especially by references early in the novel to Eleanor's childhood memories about episodes of a poltergeist-like entity that seemed to target her home. Unknown to them, the house is haunted because of the many ritualistic sacrifices conducted on an altar located in the root cellar of the mansion. The spirits of the mansion make themselves known gradually, and when the do, a foreboding sequence of events are set in motion... This film is just one big bundle of bubble wrapped cliché! The performance by the main actress wasn't too bad and I thought she did her best to carry a weak script. A poor script which was further hampered by some dodgy acting from her kids and husband who was as wooden as a garden shed. I was literally cringing at the amount of horror movie clichés in this film. I was half expecting the possessed husband to start screaming 'Here's Johnny, at one point. We did our best to steer clear of anything too gruesome, opting instead to focus on the more eerie and atmospheric productions – but we've also thrown in a couple that are family friendly and a few that veer towards the grittier side of things. 26 Spooky British Movies You Can Stream Amulet
