These have a width of 525 mm and a stem height which is quoted as 300 mm but which I measure as 280 mm.

A pair of traditional Dutch style parallel handlebars, of chromed steel, with quill style handlebar stem. Fundamentally, it looks like your bike doesn't fit you, and I don't see a lot you can do to make it fit better. We may have an apple to oranges situation with definitions, but the other advantage when I switched to the Dutch bars and hand brake levers (instead of brifters) was I was able to brake more effectively. While I realize a road bike with Dutch handlebars would not be accepted by my roadie friends, my hands do not care about that.For most utility bike usage, the most convenient handlebar shapes are the "North Road" shape as used on traditional British bikes, or the "parallel" shape also used in the Netherlands. I have the feeling, that with a curved handlebar my hands are in a much more natural position and I surly don't have to "look up" as I do on my tour bike. On my city bike on the other hand, I sit almost upright due to my curved, "dutch-style" handlebar (see picture above). Most of your weight should be supported by your feet, some of it by your butt and only a relatively small amount with your arms/hands. I am not 100% what the original poster of this answer meant with his answer so if the picture doesn't match his idea his/her input would be greatly appreciated, please let me know).

Maybe it was related to a combination of causes specific to me, but I always found braking on a drop bar with brifters to be a bit awkward.Fitting different handlebars won't make any real difference, because you already find it hard to reach the flat part of the bars you have, and those will always be the closest part.
