There is a beast tearing through Gotham’s underground and leaving Batman’s greatest villains torn to pieces. Then, when the baby was born, it hunted down everyone who was "marked" by the pheromone, attacking them when it turned out they weren't its real parent. Each of the last three issues seems to devolve further and further into a parody of itself, which given Ennis’s well-documented disdain for superheroes, could very well be the point. All throughout this miniseries, then, six issues in total, what we are being given is a Batman who not only recognizes the dread he instils, but one who also acknowledges (and, perhaps, revels in) his status as a man who has reached the peak of what the human body and the human mind can attain. The artwork style was a continual muddy and unattractive mess, and the storyline - involving some sort of sewer-dwelling mutated creature (with a noggin that seems somewhat inspired by - or is it simply ripped off from? In the end, this graphic novel is not the surprise any fan would’ve expected to get and, hopefully, isn’t the beginning of this creative team’s descent into mediocrity. Batman initially thinks this trope is in play, with a bigger, badder villain taking out all the other criminals in Gotham, but it soon becomes clear something else is going on.

I don’t stick with Batman’s theory on Croc’s origins and if you go to the bottom of it the main argument is a bit far-fetched if not totally dumb. Needs Batman to cut off the excess of skin left after giving birth, as Batman makes a fat joke at the expense of his current situation.Liam Sharp is the artist on this book instead and, if you��ve seen his work on other DC titles like Wonder Woman Rebirth, Green Lantern and The Brave and the Bold like I have, you’ll be surprised to see how different his artwork is in this book. Batman knows he represents justice, just as he knows that those who oppose him represent a kind of secular evil. He takes the no killing rule that the ideal version of his character has, and uses it as a scare tactic.

Self-Deprecation: There are a number of snarky remarks about Batman being nothing but a rich guy with too much time on his hands, most of them courtesy of Alfred.Some sort of unstoppable “Reptilian” monster is wandering around Gotham brutalizing Batman’s enemies. But now something far more frightening than a mere man stalks the shadows—and it’s after Gotham’s villains. At the end of the day, I think this is my favorite Black Label book along with Spurrier’s Hellblazer and Harleen. The book delves into a new take on Killer Croc and his evolution and, while there are some interesting ideas on display, the whole thing becomes extremely convoluted. Something much bigger and more dangerous is making its way through the Gotham criminal underworld, and apparently wiping out its villainous competition.

There are also some serious creative liberties taken for iconic characters, notably the Joker, who look nothing like anyone would’ve ever imagined for these characters. The creature's streak of mutilations are not done out of malice, but out of confusion and frustration. Or maybe, the bizarre shift in tone will feel less abrupt once the series is collected into a trade. It’s like Ennis made the conscious decision to abandon everything that made the story interesting in favor of making the goofiest possible book. This may be the funniest Batman book I have ever read, as well as one of my favorite Batman comics in recent memory.

Mr Sharp’s pages are mesmerizing, and there is an element of artistic freedom that shows how splendid the ingredient of the grotesque can be. Monster Is a Mommy: Not the monster itself, but Killer Croc, who became a hermaphrodite and gave birth to it.
