The rainbow reminds us how our heavenly Father is prepared to restrain his anger against sin, and deal with it through his Son Jesus Christ. The fountains of the deep and the windows of the heavens were closed, the rain from the heavens was restrained, and the waters receded from the earth continually.

The prophet Ezekiel compares the brilliance of his vision of God’s glory to a rainbow in Ezekiel 1:28:" As the rainbow appears that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of His brightness all around. Around the throne [were] twenty-four thrones, and on the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white robes; and they had crowns of gold on their heads.The rain clouds and the rainbow were never again to be regarded by people as a threat of ultimate judgment, but as an unchanging indicator of God’s mercy…. And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.

In Japan and China, red is the most revered color of the rainbow, which is why brides in China have traditionally worn red. I have set My rainbow in the clouds, and it will be a sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. Literally, I have given, or placed, an indication that the atmospheric phenomenon referred to had already frequently appeared (Syriac, Arabic, Aben Ezra, Chrysostom, Calvin, Willet, Murphy, Wordsworth, Kalisch, Lange).

An old picture, mentioned by Stolberg, represents a winged boy on a rainbow with an old man kneeling in a posture, of worship. The color white found in a rainbow can mean holiness, righteousness and dedication to serving the true God (Leviticus 16:4, 2Chronicles 5:12, etc. The most important reference to the rainbow in the Bible occurs in Genesis 9:13-17, where the rainbow serves as a sign of God’s covenant with Noah. Because blue is the color of the heavens, it is often associated with divinity and is used to illustrate trust and loyalty. God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. And God said: “This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: 13 “I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. And it is great news for us as well because this story clearly and beautifully points us to the time when God sent his own Son, Jesus, to die on a cross and then rise again to give humanity an amazing opportunity to escape judgment by being “hidden with Christ in God” ( Colossians 3:3; 1 Peter 3:20-22; 2 Peter 2:9).
