This is the third Oliver book apparently, although the first one I have read, not that it matters with these books. Students will discover we eat many different plant parts and that vegetables are an important part of our diet providing essential nutrients and fiber. My grandchildren (aged 3 and 4) love this little book as a bedtime story and I bought a further copy as a birthday present for another 4 year old who absolutely loves vegetables and helps her grandparents to grow them. Our commonly consumed fruits and vegetables represent all the different plant parts, however we do not eat all parts of all plants.

A delightful read that introduces days of the week and teaches young children about healthy eating – the perfect story for parents with fussy eaters. An excellent book for parents with slightly fussy children, which also introduces the days of the week.I recently read [Oliver’s Fruit Salad:], a very clear attempt to get kids to find fruits appealing foods. During each discovery, the children I was with enjoyed a discussion about their favourite foods and whether they liked or disliked the vegetable Oliver was trying. This book would be perfect for a child with difficulty trying new foods to encourage them and for a child that is interested in gardening like mine is!

Oliver is a fussy eater who would only eat chips and nothing else until he plays a game with his Grandpa. Vivian teaches part time at Edinburgh College of Art, and is one of the two founding members of the PictureHooks programme supporting Scottish illustrators. Along the way he discovers many other types of vegetables and learns that he likes more than just French fries. Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive.Throughout the story you see the growth in Oliver’s eating habits, when eventually you see Oliver eating carrots, spinach, rhubarb, cabbage and beetroot. Although the story is aimed at children who won't eat veg, it is delightful and appeals to all - veg and non veg eaters. We all loved the beautiful illustrations, they have a certain impressionistic feel to them - you really have to look to find out what's going on. Bring in a couple of potted plant to provide live samples of each part ,or take a walk in the classroom garden or schoolyard and identify roots, stems, leaves, and flowers on plants you find outside. This book is perfect in encouraging kids that are having difficulty with trying new foods and for kids that are interested in gardening.
