Quarrelin' Kringle (1080p, 3:45): Casting David Harbour for the specific qualities he brought to the film and the character he portrays. This is the one moment where Violent Night’s cynical and starry-eyed threads successfully merge. For most of the movie, both are deployed in lazy ways. Whenever the writers and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters director Tommy Wirkola need to get out from whatever narrative corner they’ve painted themselves into, they lather on the earnest evocations of the magic of Christmas. Between those moments, withering sarcasm establishes an unearned sense of superiority. Much of the film’s affected edginess is directed at the Lightstones, the clan of über-wealthy assholes (and one relatively normal guy, because an audience always needs a surrogate) who gather for a dysfunctional Christmas celebration shortly after the film’s boozy cold open.

And the audience has a lot of time to think about these things — Violent Night slows to a crawl midway through, getting too talky and earnest for the script to bear. Violent Night wrapped up its plot with a nice bow (sorry) but that doesn't mean a sequel is out of the question. A brief rundown of what went down in Violent Night ( spoilers ahead!), the very wealthy Gertrude Lightstone hosts her annual Christmas party with her daughter Avla (Edi Patterson) and son Jason, along with his soon to be ex-wife Linda (Alexis Louder) and their daughter Trudy. The other big plus Violent Night has is its, well violence. The set pieces go above and beyond, with villians being impaled, burned and dismembered. Highlights include a Home Alone inspired sequence (turns out the invaders in this film are a lot less durable than Harry and Marv) and a Mortal Kombat worthy finish to the final showdown. There's also a decent vain of comedy even if you won't exactly be guffawing in the aisles.
