In pre-agricultural Europe, the people of the Forest live in clans, each represented by a particular animal or life form. Fin-Kedinn and Saeunn, the Mage of the Raven Clan, hail Torak as the “Listener” foretold in a clan prophecy.Fin-Keddin also tells Torak that it is his destiny to one day face down and destroy the Soul Eaters. Many critics also commented on the story's oddest aspect, of telling a few chapters of the book from the point of view of a wolf. Before Torak's father dies, he tells Torak to swear an oath to head north and find the Mountain of the World Spirit, and ask the World Spirit to help destroy the bear before it eliminates all life in the Forest. Torak's father also placed him wolf den after his mother died when he was three moons old, which is why he can speak wolf talk.

He reveals to Torak that at the time of his death, Torak’s father had been engaged in a quest to defeat the Soul Eaters, a gang of renegade mages using evil magic to take over the forest. The prophecy states that the Listener, who "talks with silence and fights with air", will offer his heart's blood to the World Spirit and thereby kill the demon-bear. Torak finds the first part of the Nanuak when he falls into a river, the second part in a cave, and the third part on their treacherous crossing of the Ice River close to The High Mountains. Torak spat into his palm and made a sticky-paste of the ochre, the dark-red blood of the earth, then he drew the small circles on his father’s skin that would help the souls recognize each other and stay together after death.

When Paver was writing the first draft of Wolf Brother in 2004, she did not originally plan it to be a series of books. They are taken to the Raven camp so Torak's fate can be decided by Fin-Kedinn, the Raven Clan leader. This wasn’t easy, as his father’s chest was scarred from an old wound, so Torak only managed a lopsided oval.
