The largest car park is at the New Port (you can hop on the bus into town if you don’t fancy the walk). Corfu has long been a convenient holiday destination. With dozens of direct flights a day from the UK, getting there is easy and it takes a lot less time than to other parts of Greece too. The hard part is choosing where to stay. The good news is there is a hotel in Corfu for everyone and for every type of holiday, whether it’s a romantic weekend break or an activity-focused trip with friends. All flights land in Corfu’s main airport near the Old Town, and wherever you go next, it’sworth spending a couple of days exploring this vibrant, buzzing mix of Venetian, Byzantine and Corfiot cultures.

Old Fortress. The main attraction in Corfu Town is the Old Fortress (Paleokastro). St. George’s Church.

Strongly influenced by the Venetians, the French and the English, Corfu Town, the capital, is a brilliant base for exploration. Get lost in the narrow cobblestone alleys, the so-called “kandounia”, visit museums, such as the Museum of Asian Art, walk down the famous Liston promenade, stroll around the huge Spianada square… The whole Corfu town squeezes out a nostalgic charm! On the southern top of Corfu, you’ll discover the island’s clubbing capital. Kavos holidays are perfect for a fast-paced mix of vibrant bars, late-night clubs and high-octane water sports. And when you’re ready to relax, there’s an 8km stretch of sandy beach to enjoy while you soak up the sun, plus plenty of bars and cafés for a pitstop. You’ll also find Aqualand water park nearby (a great place to cool down on a hot day), while historic Corfu Town is easily within day trip distance (it’s less than an hour away by car). Mon Repos is a historic villa (and birthplace of Prince Philip) on the outskirts of Corfu Town, next to the ancient ruins of Paleopolis. It houses an archaeological museum an is often included in tour itineraries along with the Achilleion – a palace in Gastouri built by the Empress of Austria. Corfu’s Secret Islands. Paxi and Antipaxi aren’t the only islands you can visit from Corfu. Less well known are the tiny idylls of Diapondiaoff the north coast – consisting of Erikoussa, Othoni and Mathraki islands (plus several uninhabited islets). In the summer you can find boats from Corfu Town as well as Sidari and Agios Stefanos. Mandraki Marina and the Corfu Sailing Club are also located on the promontory. Two high and well-defined ranges divide the island into three districts, of which the northern is mountainous, the central undulating, and the southern low-lying. Originally the Palace of St Michael and St George, it was built in 1815 by the British to be the residence of of the Lord High Commission. If you do one thing in Corfu Town it should be taking coffee or an aperitif at a shady table here. The Spianada. If you’ve only got time for one meal in Corfu Town book a table at top restaurant Venetian Well, or head up to the rooftop restaurant at Cavalieri Hotel for its views. Achilleon Palace, a 19th century royal retreat just south of Corfu Town, is easy to access on the bus but is also included on many tour itineraries. How Far is Corfu Airport from Corfu Town? Angelokastro. is a hilltop Byzantine castle near Paleokastritsa with excellent views over the north-east coast.
