Any way i took it to shakey to get filled by ............(i'm sure you know who i'm on about they only do NOS) who are there at most meetings they had a grumble about the bottle type and the highpower fittings but after some messing about managed to get just 5lb in. told me that luxfer type bottle meant for co2 so possibly will not hold the 11lbs that you might think it should. only had to pay for 5lb so no real harm done. Cooler intake air is denser and therefore contains more oxygen, which will allow more fuel to be burned and in turn make more power. Just a 10 degree drop in temperature has the potential to increase an engines power by up to 1.5%. Nitrous oxide boils at -129°F and it begins to do that as soon as it’s injected into the intake manifold. To boil, the nitrous has to absorb heat from the intake charge and in so doing has the potential to reduce the intake air temperature by up to 80°, which means that if we were dealing with say a 400 hp engine, we could see a gain of over 30 hp from the cooling effect alone and as a bonus, this cooling effect also helps the engine stay below the detonation threshold.

Just to clarify, a 5lb bottle won't actually hold 5lb's of nitrous (sounds crazy I know). It's in fact a 2 kg bottle which is just about 4.5 lbs of nitrous. However, it's pretty easy to squeeze in that extra 1/2 lb. If the difference is less than the weight that SHOULD be in the bottle, only pay for the difference between the empty weight and the returned weight. When stored in the bottle, nitrous oxide is primarily a liquid, and when stored at room temperatures produces between 600 to 800 pounds per square inch of pressure. To maximize the volume exiting the bottle, the temperature is raised by a bottle heater (wrap-around or water-bath) to produce a bottle pressure of 900 to 1,000 pounds per square inch. As the system opens to the engine, it is injected as a gas that consists of two parts nitrogen and one part oxygen. It is this oxygen molecule that allows increased power from an engine when the appropriate amount of fuel is added to the mixture. It’s a bit more complicated to deliver the nitrous to the engine than one might think, though.

Firstly, it contains around 16 per cent more oxygen than air. Secondly, nitrous is a liquid that boils to become a gas. Therefore, for it to work properly and to its full potential, it’s imperative to make sure it’s still in liquid form as it reaches the intake manifold. This will maximize the heat exchange with the intake charge. This is why when you blow on a fire the flames get higher and also why smoking inside an oxygen tent is a big no-no. When nitrous oxide(NOS) is heated it releases its oxygen and allows it to react with the fuel. Doctors have warned about an increase in spinal cord and nerve damage caused by the drug, including paralysis. For this reason, it’s easier and cheaper to install and it will come in more progressively. This makes it easier on drivetrain components and gives less chance of clutch slip. However, as the nitrous has further to travel before it reaches the cylinders, it has more chance of turning to gas. In addition, on some applications it isn’t possible to use. If the throttle body is mounted lower than the inlet valves, for instance, then the mixture will have problems reaching the engine. With all the above in mind, it is obviously essential to supply the engine with precise amounts of additional fuel to match the amount of nitrous oxide being added (to ensure the engine doesn’t run lean) and to retard the timing to an optimum setting, to achieve successful and reliable results. When all three (fuel, nitrous and timing) are controlled accurately, your engine can safely and reliably generate exceptional power increases without causing damage due to detonation. The most important add-on of all; traction control for nitrous. A basic unit simply pulses the solenoids open and shut to deliver smaller amounts of nitrous as and when you want it. This means it can gradually deliver a larger and larger shot progressively rather than all at once. In turn, allowing the engine to slowly consume more nitrous when it can. It also allows a much bigger dose; increased air speed at higher speed and rpm means the nitrous is more diluted with air, and therefore capable of consuming more. Clever versions have extras such as recognizing what gear you’re in and increasing the dosage it injects throughout the gear. They also enable safety features, such as delaying injection time until after the clutch is disengaged. The use of nitrous oxide as a performance enhancement has been used since World War II. Allied aircraft used it for emergency boosts in airspeed and altitude capabilities. By the end of World War II, jet propulsion had been invented and the United States' government was losing interest in piston-powered aircraft. For nearly thirty years, the application of nitrous oxide on vehicles would be privileged information.

How did nitrous oxide come about?
