Tweede leven' is niet echt een superspannende thriller en ik zou ook dit verhaal eerder psychologisch noemen. Het leest supervlot en de afwisseling tussen het heden en het verleden vond ik echt goed in elkaar steken (vooral het verleden vond ik heel erg interessant). Uiteindelijk valt alles op zijn plek. The Only Suspect was a book I couldn’t put down! Louise Candlish you did it again, I was riveted with this storyline that is very unpredictable. This book is phenomenal. The twists and turns it takes had me gasping and wondering how it will all end because there are so many things and scenes that i haven't predicted. MY THOUGHTS: I loved that opening paragraph; it's so full of promise. Unfortunately it's a promise that isn't delivered.

The plot is clever, the characters are unpleasantly credible and the revelations give the tiniest sense of reassurance -- Literary Review I haven’t read much of Louise Candlish’s work so far but am keen to read more since I read her book, Our House and watched the TV adaptation. The two stories eventually merge of course and not in the way I expected. I know others will certainly enjoy this twisty read. I did also but I think ultimately I didn’t really care as much as I would have liked about some of the players, from the past and present, so was ultimately unaffected by events that played out.While I didn’t warm to the characters and found them quite unlikeable, certainly none that I would like to be friends with. Louise Candlish does a brilliant job of showing how the characters found themselves suddenly entangled in extreme situations in this complicated and elaborate story. Impossible to resist, impossible to predict, impossible to put down . . . this is an author at the top of her game' Erin Kelly Once again, Candlish gives the reader a tightly-plotted tale with plenty of red herrings and distractions that keep the reader guessing right up to the final, fantastic twist and reveal. Her setting and era are perfectly rendered, and her characters recall people we all meet in everyday life, even if many of them are not at all what they first seem to be. This is excellent slow-burn British crime fiction.

Alex lives a comfortable life with his wife Beth in the leafy suburb of Silver Vale. Fine, so he’s not the most extrovert guy on the street, he prefers to keep himself to himself, but he’s a good husband and an easy-going neighbour. In the present we have Alex who seems to be coasting along in married bliss with his wife Beth. He lives in Silver Vale, he is not the friendliest of men but makes an effort.

Oh my, what a rollercoaster of a book. We jump from 1995 to present day, in almost a diary-like form, reading about two seemingly different couples. It drew me in and I finished this in one sitting, and the ending blew me away. So well written there was no clue as to who the only suspect was going to be. Do yourself a favour and read this book. You’d be hard-pressed to find a better read of this genre out there at the moment. Nicola, VIC, 5 Stars This was a really well written thriller that I enjoyed from start to finish. There were a couple of characters I didn’t really like but I think that made the book work for me even better. I never knew where this was going to go and I didn’t work it out. The narrative toggles between the two as the story unfolds, the events of the past gradually unyielding their secrets one by one in a really cleverly plotted story. Knowing Louise Candlish, I knew to expect twists, but this story is full of them, and keeps you guessing until the end. While Alex isn't likeable, I kinda fked with him on the basis that he doesn't overdo the Mr. Nice Guy(TM) charade. While he's definitely not true to himself, he is entertaining in a way. I found his snarky and cheeky inner monologue to be amusing. Yes, Beth deserves better, without a doubt. And no, I don't want to be married to Alex. But hey, if you're gonna give me a bad guy, give me a funny one at least 😂 It kinda reminded me of Lucas from Never Coming Home. The Only Suspect kept me guessing all the way through. I’m a huge fan of this thriller writer’s clever, serpentine stories. When the waste ground behind his house is approved for development, it spells trouble for Alex, who is hiding a big secret – but what? Just when I thought I’d figured it out, along came another twist! -- Good Housekeeping Interestingly he’s surrounded by equally unlikeable characters, including a single pregnant woman Beth brings into their house. Perhaps this is another reason I didn’t engage with this part of the story. Alex lives a comfortable life with his wife Beth in the leafy suburb of Silver Vale. Fine, so he’s not the most sociable guy on the street, he prefers to keep himself to himself, but he’s a good husband and an easy-going neighbour. In the beginning I was wondering what's the connection to these two men for the now storyline and soon we learn that there are many secrets buried in the past that will be unveiled. After half point mark I got the dreaded feeling that I knew what's actually happening and I wasn't wrong in the end. But there are so many other twists that left me reeling from it all. So disappointed in this. Was really looking forward to it. Have enjoyed many of her books (Other Passenger was fab and a fave) but this was dire. Boring and questionable storyline and it dragged on and on.
