At Pooley Bridge, near the north eastern head of Ullswater, you will find the Duke of Portland Boathouse. This is a picturesque building with views looking south west down the Lake, which is easily accessed from the main A592 road. There is very convenient parking in a lay-by behind the boathouse, and it’s only a couple of hundred yards walk to reach the best viewpoints.

In the book's first section, author Stuart Holmes describes 70 locations and hundreds of viewpoints for the reader to visit. Each location chapter starts with an overview describing historical, literary, geological, and natural history features including the photographic potential. Detailed directions with maps and sat nav information are given, along with access information including whether a location is accessible by wheelchair. I’ve shot from this pike at many different times of year, and there is no month that wouldn’t this very photogenic landscape. But when the purple hwhich eather blooms among the limestone outcrops in summer it really does make for a very pleasing, colourful foreground. We chatted with local Vallerret Ambassadors Lee Gale and Simon Baxter to get their best tips for visiting and capturing the magic of the Lake District. What are the highlights you can expect to see when visiting the Lake District:

1. Derwentwater

The second section consists of chapters offering photographic advice on how to improve your photography including: camera and lens choice, composition, exposure, depth of field, sunrise and sunset photography, how to catch a rainbow and how to photograph waterfalls. To put that into perspective, more than a quarter of the population of the UK will visit the Lakes at some point in a typical year. So, what’s so special about the area? Why visit the Lake District?

Rydal Water is a small lake situated only a couple of miles north west of the village of Ambleside. As such, it’s an easy location to get to, and the access and parking is pretty good. There are quite a few good viewpoints you can head for, so I’ve listed a few of my favourites here. I’d advise arriving around the earlier part of the day, and sunrise in particular, for the best light and conditions. Viewpoint 1 (Shoreline) Viewpoint 1 (Shoreline) Okay, it’s not so little. This National Park covers 2,362 square kilometers and showcases the country’s largest lakes, tallest mountains, and most stunning scenery. As you might guess, the Lake District is named after16 glacial lakes that lie in long ribbons among its fells, moors, and verdant valleys. Meanwhile, a short walk away at Crow Park, is a wooden gate and wire fence that provides a great subject when partly submerged by high water. Walk to Friars Crag too and explore the views south to the jaws of Borrowdale. When you are shooting lakeside, the best conditions are typically still, cool, misty mornings and Derwentwater is a great morning location throughout the year. 2. Ashness Launch With so many locations available, it is difficult to do justice to the whole area in such a short article. But, here are a few of my favourite spots to head for, once the crowds begin to disappear and the leaves begin to turn. If you’ve read my description of the best time to photograph Wastwater you’ll already know I highly recommend not being restricted to time of year, or time of day. I would apply this recommendation to all the locations I suggest. Work with what you have at the time – there are numerous possibilities to create some magic here at any time of year, any time of day. Better to focus on compositional opportunities than to worry about if there’s a better time. With camera in hand, right now, there is no better time!If the thought of all that hill climbing sounds like way too much effort for you, then you don’t have to travel too far from the car here for some great autumnal images. From the same parking spot near St Mary’s church, head into the grounds of Rydal Hall.

If you visit Ashness Jetty in the morning, you will have the sun lighting the fells in the distance; you can also capture a great shot at sunset, as the sun drops below the distant horizon.

It’s a short if a little steep climb to the top of the crag, and there are various viewpoints on the way up that give you breath-taking views of both Little Langdale, and as you climb further up, Great Langdale.
