The character of Uncle Remus, originated in the collected stories of Joel Chandler Harris, epitomizes the Magical Negro trope that persists in Hollywood today. In this sense, while it might be a memorable film for many of us, it is not exactly "a film that has a place in film history"—in the sense of a film that marked the evolution of cinema as an art form (in fact, most film history books don't even mention it). Viewing that movie as an eleven year old child, I knew of the bias presented because I had learned it in school as well as from my parents. Br'er Bear and Br'er Fox also appeared frequently in Disney's Big Bad Wolf stories, although here, Br'er Bear was usually cast as an honest farmer and family man, instead of an antagonist in his original appearances. The entire movie took place post Civil War, and the entire movie black people were treated the same as white people were.

If you want to watch Song of the South, your best bet is to try to find a legitimate copy from a foreign country where the movie is available. Joel Chandler Harris is one of the preservers or Black Heritage, and I thank Disney for making this film. The Hays Office reviewed Reymond's outline, and demanded that some terminology, such as characters referring to Remus as an "old darkie" be removed from Reymond's treatment.
