The HD-1000 Black Edition by Janome provides super sturdy construction and easy-to-use features for a dependable and enjoyable sewing experience. Actually, I'd be surprised with the basic feed dog and single buttonhole, to find that the HD1000 had something as "advanced" as needle up/down. On many machines, these results will only be achieved with the correct needle and thread combination, so specialty needles and threads may need to be purchased separately and may not be supplied with your machine. The fact that it isn't comprised of all plastic parts was another big positive for me although it's really not that much more weight and it's still much lighter than my serger.

The Janome comparison charts are blank for needle up/down (vs "yes"or "memorized") in other machines. You should consult the manual for your machine to ensure that the machine is set up correctly when sewing different fabrics, and always sew test samples to get the best possible stitch quality and to achieve perfectly balanced tension. I wanted a new machine to sew through many layers of fabric easily such as when I make denim backpacks. If automated controls are important to you then you might like to consider a machine classed as Competent, Advanced or Professional. Standard accessories that come with the Janome HD1000 BE include a universal, zipper, zigzag, buttonhole, and hemmer presser feet, a set of needles and bobbins, machine tools, and a handy hem guide. Also adjust bobbin tension to match the thread or have a few bobbin cases for different weight thread.Mechanical machines are wonderful, but remember you are 100% in control the machine is not going to do anything for you. A simple machine to use, the HD1000 BE has all the basic features that you could need for any type of sewing.

Dunno if it will show you exactly the same thing, but drop down to "machine comparison" and pick a few of the machines to the right. I was drawn to this machine because of how sleek it looks and found a reddit thread recommending the HD1000. The item itself is amazing--a fantastic addition to my Juki Haruka (or any other TL series) for complete garment construction capability!

In general, machines that are classed as "Beginner" tend to have all of the features that we think a beginner will need to be able to learn how to sew.
