My gameplay overview will be brief, if you've never played Castles of Burgundy, you should, it’s one of the classics. You roll two dice and use these dice for various actions. Your goal is to build your Duchy using different tiles. Your Duchy is a map filled with hexes that you can build various buildings on. You can use your dice to buy buildings from the shared pool, use them to place tiles on your board. You can even use them to sell goods you acquire or buy workers that enable you to alter your dice rolls and help you fill your Duchy even further. One random board per player: each player is given a single random duchy / estate among available ones. Two players can have the same duchy / estate. Completing Areas - You should concentrate on completing the small areas of 1 or 2, especially in the first 2 phases. Most of your placements should be towards filling in those areas in the first two phases. Work on the bigger areas later in the game. The gameplay may sound a little complex but it’s dead simple once you get the gist. There’s not a huge amount of player interaction and therefore has minimal conflict – aside from perhaps getting a tad peeved that another player nabbed your sought after tile. Board 1 - The so called beginner board. Here is my issue with the board, it is just ok. It is good for an animal strategy due to the large animal area and one should try and do animals with this one. It just usually scores less on average than most of the other boards. Most people tell newbies to the game to play on this board and I don’t think that is needed. The other boards really don’t add that much complexity to the game. It’s actually the board I’m least experienced at, and the way to beat me in a tourney is to suggest to the organizer that “Hey, everyone should just play on board 1”.

First, all players roll their two dice, with the start player also rolling the white die. Then all players place their dice in front of themselves so that all players can see them. As noted above the insert is also compatible with Castles of Burgundy® original edition. When used like this the insert can then store both The Card Game® and The Dice Game® Note: Rolling simultaneously allows those players whose turns come later to start planning their turns ahead of time. This 2019 New edition of The Castles of Burgundy also includes eight expansions. Originally, these were only available as separate promotions. Here, though, they come with this upgraded base game. This is a bit like ‘Castles of Burgundy: The Big Box’! There’s also a little treat inside for fans of the original. One of the eight promotional modules is new to this release. The cover art is perfectly reminiscent of medieval France and definitely has that familiar Euro game feel about it. The artwork within the game may be simplistic but it’s certainly vibrant – every time I photograph my plays it just pops.

Each knowledge tile has a different effect. Some of these are immediate effects, which then remain in place for the rest of the game. Some effects only impact on game end scoring.

Game Components

When a player places a ship tile they take all of the goods tiles on any one depot space and add them to the goods section of their board. Goods of the same type can be piled on the same space. Where possible chain placing tiles. Some tiles, the castle and some of the buildings, let you do a certain action on the turn they are placed, on top of the two actions you have. This is like having a free dice roll. Sometimes these can chain together so you end up having multiple additional actions on your turn, really building your estate. We love the Castles of Burgundy in our house. It is one of those beautiful amalgamations of an easy ruleset intertwined with a constant stream of meaningful decisions that we really find entertaining. I will not talk too much about the base game and its rules in this review though. This is the Castles of Burgundy 2nd edition review, dubbed the 20th Anniversary Edition but weirdly not an anniversary for Castles itself but the 20th Anniversary but the publishers. Which is just strange. This shiny new edition comes with loads of extras, expansions, promos, boards and a slight graphical redesign to one of the greatest and most loved games of all time. Have the games that have come since improved and refined the core mechanics and made something similar, but better? Should I still buy this game in 2021? Yes. Yes you should The insert has one additional tray, not used for the Anniversary Edition, which takes the place of the trade route tiles. This tray can be used to store the dice from The Dice Game®. The game is simple to learn and has great replayability. It is a game that can be enjoyed by every age group- our ten year old beat us by dominating farming!Great online store for board games. They always arrive perfectly and undamaged which is important to me. Worker Tiles - Try and gain worker tiles from the boarding house building that way you aren't wasting an action to get 2 tiles. With those you get to place a building and get 4 tiles. So scoop those up if you can. Also the knowledge tile that gives you 4 workers when you turn in for worker's isn't bad. Most say try and not to spend workers too much but sometimes you have to get the stuff you want and sometimes it is worth it.
