Whether you want to connect a graphics card for video output, a network card for faster networking speeds, or want to connect a SATA card for connecting more hard drives, it is highly important to have enough PCI-E and Expansion slots in your motherboard to ensure that you can build a high-performance NAS. I’m excited because I have quite a bit of faith from my firsthand experience with the motherboard using it in the earlier DIY NAS build. Sure, it won't be nearly as well-engineered as an R630, but for people who want a compact NAS it seems like checks lots of blocks. With the AM4 socket, you can pair this motherboard with a low-end and affordable AMD Athlon 3000 series CPU. Drives with a smaller capacity exist, but if they’re from a company that I recognize, they’re usually as expensive–or sometimes more expensive! The MSI MAG B660M Mortar with Micro-ATX form factor is the ideal motherboard for building a low-profile NAS due to its small size and lower power requirements.
