Description

Contains paracetamol. Care is advised in the administration of paracetamol to patients with severe renal or severe hepatic impairment. The concomitant use with other products containing paracetamol may lead to an overdose. Paracetamol overdose may cause liver failure which may require liver transplant or lead to death. Side effects: See SPC for full details. Thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis. Anaphylaxis, cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions including skin rashes and angioedema. Bronchospasm and dyspnoea, hepatic dysfunction, and acute pancreatitis. Mydriasis and acute angle closure glaucoma. Tachycardia and palpitations. Nervousness, irritability, restlessness, excitability, headache, dizziness, insomnia, increased blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort. Dysuria and urinary retention. Medical advice should sought if symptoms worsen, persist for more than 7 days, or are accompanied by high fever, skin rash or persistent headache.

Beechams cold & flu sachets contain two active ingredients, the painkiller paracetamol (600mg) and a decongestant called phenylephrine hydrochloride (10mg). The powder in the sachets is dissolved in hot water to make a hot drink. Indications: Relief of sinus pain and the symptoms of colds and influenza, including fatigue and drowsiness.

Women who are pregnant. (Phenylephrine has blood vessel constricting effects that could restrict blood supply to the placenta, or cause problems for women with a history of pre-eclampsia. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice on how to treat cold and flu symptoms during pregnancy.) An overdose of paracetamol is dangerous and capable of causing serious damage to the liver and kidneys. A wealth of other cold and flu remedies are available to buy without a prescription. Patients should be advised not to take other paracetamol-containing or any other cold, flu or decongestant products concurrently. Liver damage is possible in adults who have taken 10g or more of paracetamol. Ingestion of 5g or more of paracetamol may lead to liver damage if the patient has risk factors (see below). If you're taking medicines for high blood pressure you shouldn't take Beechams cold & flu, because the decongestant may make your blood pressure medicine less effective. Dosage: Adults (including elderly) and children aged 16 years and over: Cold & Flu: One sachet to be taken every four hours, if necessary, up to a maximum of six sachets in any 24 hours. Flu Plus: One sachet to be taken every four-six hours, as necessary, up to a maximum of four sachets in any 24 hours. Do not take continuously for more than 7 days without medical advice. Patients with rare hereditary problems of fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption or sucrase-isomaltase insufficiency should not take this medicine. Many medicines contain a combination of ingredients that help relieve the different symptoms you might get with a cold or the flu. When choosing a product, look for ingredients that will help with the particular symptoms you have.

Some sore throat medicines also contain ingredients like honey or lemon to soothe the throat and provide additional relief.Warnings and Precautions: Patients should be advised not to take other paracetamol-containing products concurrently, especially those with non-cirrhotic alcoholic liver disease. Do not take with other sympathomimetics, decongestants or cold and flu medicines should be avoided. Medical advice should be sought before using this product in patients with an enlargement of the prostate gland, glutathione depletion due to metabolic deficiencies, occlusive vascular disease, and cardiovascular disease. Excessive intake of caffeine should be avoided. Patients who are taking warfarin should seek medical advice before taking this product. Contains sunset yellow/ amaranth (E110) which may cause an allergic reaction. Immediate medical advice should be sought in the event of an overdose. Beechams Max Strength All in One Capsules, hard (paracetamol, guaifenesin, phenylephrine hydrochloride). Treatment with activated charcoal should be considered if the overdose has been taken within 1 hour. Plasma paracetamol concentration should be measured at 4 hours or later after ingestion (earlier concentrations are unreliable). Treatment with N-acetylcysteine may be used up to 24 hours after ingestion of paracetamol, however, the maximum protective effect is obtained up to 8 hours post-ingestion. The effectiveness of the antidote declines sharply after this time. If required the patient should be given intravenous N-acetylcysteine, in line with the established dosage schedule. If vomiting is not a problem, oral methionine may be a suitable alternative for remote areas, outside hospital. Management of patients who present with serious hepatic dysfunction beyond 24 hours from ingestion should be discussed with the NPIS or a liver unit.
