This is not our first Shatterpoint article, nor will it be our last. We’ve been excited about this new Star Wars adventure since the initial announcement and having gotten our hands on it and played a few games that hype has been fulfilled. The game certainly seems to be a similar, squad-based skirmish game, where players will build small teams of characters with very different and individual powers to battle it out, but AMG have promised that this is very much a game in it’s own right rather than simply taking the rules from their Marvel-based game wholesale. AMG have promised plenty more details in the months leading up to the release date of June 2023 to keep us interested and our interests aroused over the next six months. The little teases. So Star Wars Fans Are Celebrating? Combat is my favorite system in the game, though it isn’t without it’s pitfalls. It makes the most sense to explain it via an image, so take a second to look at Darth Maul’s double-sided combat card. This box is jammed full of everything you need to play. Enough miniatures for two full teams, a good amount of terrain, and all the cards, tokens and accessories. It’s a fun game and the miniatures look great. No Star Wars fan should be without it.

Battle for the Fate of the Galaxy in Star Wars: Shatterpoint!

Apart from a very brief “teaser” video showing off some of the new- and very fine looking models- the actual game play mechanics haven’t been shown or discussed yet. What we do know, is that this is going to be a small scale skirmish game similar to Marvel Crisis Protocol but set in the Star Wars Universe and by the looks of some of the models, around the time of the Clone Wars. Timeline wise this is just before and leading into the Phantom Menace and onwards. Photo: Charlie Hall/Polygon When a model’s health pool is exhausted, they’re laid down and effectively taken off the battlefield. They can’t contest objectives, take any more damage, trigger abilities, and so on. The next time they would activate they stand up, clear their damage, and take a full activation before gaining a Wound token. At this point if their Wound tokens equal their Durability stat they’re removed. But fate has a big roll to play in Shatterpoint: by nesting some of your abilities inside combat resolution, you’re presented with fresh choices even after you’ve committed to your character’s action for the turn.

Star Wars is all about balance, about the push and pull of light and dark. So is Shatterpoint. Matches are divided into Struggles; winning a game of Shatterpoint means winning 2 out of 3 Struggles. Rather than scoring points Struggles are won through an objective focused game of tug of war. Shatterpoint is snappy yet full of tactical depth. Despite being a skirmish game, matches are likely to push 90 minutes or more if you go the full 3 skirmishes and every minute is going to be layered with decision after decision. Overlapping abilities minimize downtime, combat comes with as much movement as an activation, and list building options will only grow. The plot of Shatterpoint was highly influenced by both Joseph Conrad's book Heart of Darkness and the movie based on it, Apocalypse Now. This was chosen to give the story a gritty feel, and Matthew Stover describes the concept as arising in a brainstorming session, encapsulated in a single sentence: " Apocalypse Now with Jedi."Stover heavily references Shatterpoint, along with Labyrinth of Evil and numerous graphic novels, in his novelization of Revenge of the Sith. Shatterpoint does not have “true line of sight” which is any system where you bend over and try to see what your miniature can see. It’s a system that has its own pitfalls, particularly when attempting to define cover or obscured models, but it’s at least typically intuitive. The core set comes with all the miniatures you need to play a game of Shatterpoint. There’s four Squads, each consisting of: a Primary Unit, like the Jedi Anakin Skywalker or Sith Darth Maul; a Secondary Unit, such as the Mandalorian Bo-Katan Kryze or Super Tactical Droid Kalani; and a Supporting Unit, such as a pair of 501st Clone Troopers, or two Mandalorian super-commandos. Further on, Mace and the party encounter Kar Vastor, a dangerous lor pelek (lord of the jungle) and volatile Force-user who leads a cadre of elite men known as Akk Guards. After a conflict, Vastor allies with Mace, and the Master rendezvouses with Depa Billaba, who has fallen to the dark side of the Force. He arrests her after learning that she has been responsible for several atrocities. His attachments let his old friend live, however, and so Dooku was able to go on and initiate the Clone Wars. In only a short span of time, the shatterpoint that made Dooku the heart of the war disappeared. [5] Eventually Mace realized a number of shatterpoints connected with Anakin Skywalker, prior to Anakin's fall. Mace was also able to sense the Shatterpoint of Darth Sidious; his trust in Skywalker. [8] Shatterpoints were perceived like faults in a Corusca gem. In relation to events, a single "strike," or action, could cause events to transpire completely differently than they might otherwise have. Often, shatterpoints existed for only brief moments, as they could be affected by even the smallest actions. [5] Shatterpoints could also be discovered in the physiology of living beings. Cade Skywalker was able to perceive shatterpoints in Darth Talon and Nyna Calixte, whom he had previously healed from mortal injury. By focusing through the Force on where the healing had taken place, Skywalker was able to see where her old wounds were, and reopen them. [6]

Mace Windu is a living legend: Jedi Master, skilled diplomat, and devastating fighter. But he is also a man of peace—and for the first time in a thousand years, the galaxy is at war. The B1 Battle Droids are grouped three models to a base, similar to the Hydra Troops and S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents from Atomic Mass’ sister game Marvel Crisis Protocol. This gives 12 ‘units’, with four units together forming a ‘squad’.This Star Wars: Shatterpoint core set review looks at everything in the box, from widgets to win-conditions, to judge whether Shatterpoint is an elegant wargame for a more civilized age, or just more bantha fodder. A review sample of the core set was provided by Atomic Mass Games. It isn’t just these, however. An early expansion includes Magnaguard which also have the Battle Droid keyword giving Kalani even more flexibility and expanding the overlapping aura of benefits. Again in the core set you can pair the Light Side Bo Katan with Dark Side Gar Saxon and all the Mandalorian Support Units to find yourself tossing buffs and out-of-sequence movement all over the place. Combat Crunch Combat also includes expertise symbols. While not quite a sucess, in some situations they are even more valuable as they open up additional options. As an example, Maul’s Juyo expertise includes healing and movement on defense. This means that even in the worst case of Durability 1, all units are guaranteed at least 1 activation before being pulled off the table. All core box models, even the fragile B1s, have a durability of at least 2 which means they have to be taken down a full two times before they’re removed.
