The bestselling LGBTQ+ graphic novel about life, love, and everything that happens in between: this is the fifth volume of the Heartstopper series. is good about using “gay situations” as the set-up for a joke but not as the joke itself; one of the most memorable gags in the entire volume is when Nakamura meets Hirose’s older sister, who looks just like him, is smitten, and Nakamura spends the rest of the chapter thinking “maybe I’m bi? Although it appears that most of their other works are also short series and that most of them are more sexual in nature (also that nearly every other leading couple in their other series look like Nakamura and Hirose which I find amusing) so if this is the only work of Syundei’s that gets brought over for a long time I’m glad it was Nakamura!

My favorite relationship is the accidental “bond” between Nakamura and one of his female classmates after she mistakes him for a fellow BL fan when really Nakamura was just very excited over her drawing of Hirose. I have read this manga 8 times (and 9 times if you include this last time) from the beginning whenever a new chapter was released.Frieren is still going strong continuing from last season, but The Dangers in My Heart is the one stealing the spotlight!

Syundei’s charming and funny BL manga features an attractively retro artwork, hearkening back to an earlier age of high school uniforms and hairstyles in manga, paying homage, perhaps, to the work of veteran mangaka like Rumiko Takahashi ( Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2).Most of what Nakamura does ends up backfiring amazingly on him, and overall, the opinion his classmates have of him stays more or less the same, but he manages to slowly become closer to Hirose which was his main goal anyway. Maybe this is one of those comics best appreciated by those who've been there, but who hasn't been there? He is largely sympathetic to most, but this considerate side of his causes him to struggle with expressing his real, not always agreeable feelings. He also has acrylic crab keychain worn on his waist, done as a reference to Nakamura's gift in Chapter 11.

Nakamura is a shy boy who falls in love at first sight with another boy--his dreamy high school classmate Hirose. One comment Syundei makes about Chapter 4: ‘This story came about because I was thinking “How can I sneak girl characters into a Boy’s Love manga? However, it was not funny at all because it was like, “why would THIS be what you’d jump to”, and it made me feel suspicious of the author. I also really like the art style; it's definitely more old-school and seinen-like, which is what makes it even more special in a modern BL setting like this.

And when a chance presents itself, Nakamura’s just the kind of unlucky guy to mess up big time; his school life seems cursed with pratfalls and misunderstandings. I loved this and would recommend to anyone who loves gentle BL and was a fan of Ranma 1/2 back in the day. The official translation of the manga might or might've not been posted there, this is extremely useful for wiki editors like me to see the proper translation. Overall, I think the uproar in favor of this work as one that is a “great step forward” for LGBT+ manga is misguided; from my perspective, it’s just more of the same old stuff I hate and would like for authors to move on from. In the Afterword, Syundei treats us to a brief but insightful breakdown of each chapter and the history of this collection ( Nakamura began online in 2014, then was published by the enterprising BL magazine OPERA).
