The Aardman Classics stamp issue, released on October 19, is a celebration of the creative genius of British film studio Aardman Animations, which has been crafting beautifully detailed and humorous films in its instantly recognisable stop-motion style for almost half a century. Royal Mail has today revealed a set of stamps, celebrating Aardman’s most popular and beloved animated characters.The codes match the stamp colour and sit alongside the main body of the stamp, separated by a simulated perforation line. Aardman was founded by Peter Lord and David Sproxton, who began their animation partnership while at school when they created a character called Aard-man, which the BBC bought for its Vision On series and marked the creation of Aardman Animations. Customers can scan the coding – which takes the form of a rectangular 2D barcode – in the Royal Mail app and will eventually be able to watch videos, information about services, or birthday messages and other greetings from senders.

A mischievous figure who can transform into any shape he likes, Morph was Aardmanʼs first character to achieve national fame. He guested on the childrenʼs television show Take Hart before starring in his own series, The Amazing Adventures of Morph, from 1980, where he was joined by an even cheekier partner in crime, Chas. Wallace and Gromit tangle with a serial killer in A Matter of Loaf & Death, a short film made in 2008.

Stop-motion animation utilises three-dimensional models made from flexible materials, such as clay, often built around a wire skeleton. They are moved in tiny increments, usually 12 times for every second of film, giving the companyʼs films a distinctive hand-made feel. This is a sheet of only 8 stamps, ie the full set with no duplication. It's self-adhesive, so the stamps may not be materially different to those in sheets.

This was Aardmanʼs first stop-motion film to use felt puppets rather than clay figures. We have had the pleasure of creating these films featuring these much-loved characters over the last 40 years, so it is a real honour for the studio to receive this royal stamp of approval.
