Sakonji was a capable Demon Slayer trained with the style of Water Breathing, and was solely responsible for capturing the Hand Demon and imprisoning him on Mount Fujikasane. He would then go on to become the Water Hashira for an undisclosed period of time, before retiring to become one of the cultivators of the Water Breathing style to Demon Slayers. Having received a letter from Giyu Tomioka requesting that he train Tanjiro Kamado, explaining the boy and his sister's circumstances, Sakonji set forth from his home to find the two. [3] Upon finding them, he stops Tanjiro from attempting to kill a demon with his knife, stating that he will be unable to kill the creature with such a weak weapon. These conditions allow the ore to be infused with sunlight, which is the only significant weakness that demons face. It’s a rite of passage and part of a Demon Slayer’s training to acquire the ore that’s used to construct their weapon. Once forged, these Nichirin blade swords constantly absorb sunlight, which allows them to be essentially the only tool that’s practically able to kill demons. Nichirin blades are therefore the primary weapon of the Demon Slayer Corps and an essential tool.

As fans like you may have noticed, there are kanji characters written on Giyu’s sword that seem to match the ones we see on other hashira’s swords. These symbols translate roughly to “Destroy all evil demons” as explained by the village swordsmith in the manga. All of the demon slayers have this written into their blades. Light pink correlates to the Flower Pillar Demon Slayer, but a richer shade of the color is reserved for the Corps’ Pillar of Love. Mitsuri Kanroji’s pink sword works together with her Love breathing style, which is full of emotion and empathy. It’s an impressive way to weaponize Mitsuri’s delicate and tender feelings through her weapon. These materials can only be found at the tops of mountains where the altitude ensures that they’re always exposed to the sun, giving them the chance to absorb the power of sunlight. 4. Giyu’s Nichirin Sword Is Real (Kind Of)Water Breathing ( 水 ( みず ) の 呼 ( こ ) 吸 ( きゅう ) , Mizu no kokyū ?): A Breathing Style taught to him by the Water Hashira before him, Sakonji Urokodaki.
