We must talk about combat. The combat in this board game is just wonderful. It's a mix of dice-rolling and card play, with both elements equally crucial to the final outcome. Forbidden Stars has found a way of giving a weaker force a fighting chance of victory – smart card play, and better cards, can help some cultists stave off some Space Marines. The combat system: At first I didn't like it. It took ages, I didn't fully get the morale system, and it always felt like I was peeing in the wind to get a victory. Now that I am familiar with it I have come to appreciate it for the complex and layered system that it is. Yes, there is some randomness with the card draws, but when you get to know the cards and how to react to changing situations then it becomes immensely satisfying as you do your best to shape the battle in your favour.

Ok yeah it can be complex to teach, but once you get a hang of the rules and a passion for teaching it, then it gets much easier to condense the information for people into manageable chunks. Ok yeah it can also be a looong game, especially at 4 players when people don’t know the rules so well, but that cuts down when people get to know it better and there is less AP. Having long ago given themselves to the service of the Blood God, the World Eaters Chaos Space Marines have no dread of the Warp’s swirling and uncanny abyss. Of all the factions in Forbidden Stars, they alone can utilize the Warp for their own benefit. By playing a Combat in Forbidden Stars is tense, tactical and dramatic - so it’s ironic that it’s also one of the points where the game most noticeably falls down. While battles are absolutely gripping for the players involved, they leave everyone else at the table with nothing to do until the fight is resolved, and with a bit of mental arithmetic involved in calculating the outcome, it can cause the game to drag. Fantasy Flight Games’ YouTube Channel has some very nicely produced tutorials for their other games; the Eldritch Horror Overview is excellent. Yet there was bupkis for Forbidden Stars, aside from the short promo linked above. After some searching I found a fan-made video demonstration. It was immensely helpful to watch a few rounds of play, the shaky-camera-from-a-90’s-Advil-commercial notwithstanding.To move a Warp Storm, the player chooses one Warp Storm that has not moved this phase. Cada facción tiene cuatro tipos de unidades terrestres (podríamos llamar infantería ligera, infantería pesada, vehículos y titánicas) y dos de naves espaciales. La representación es lo de menos; por ejemplo, en el caso de los Ultramarines la infantería ligera es un banderín (supongo que son exploradores), la pesada es un estandarte (¿marines estándar?), el vehículo es un Land Raider de los antiguos, con cañones láser en las barquillas; y la titánica es un warhound (que muy Ultramarine no es, por cierto).
