It comes with a refreshing flavor, a captivating aroma, and a cloudy appearance that accompanies its clean, crisp finish. The fruit beer contains 4.9% alcohol by volume and has an IBU of 13. Its fruity taste makes it the perfect beer to pair with a wide range of dishes, including sausage roll coleslaw, ginger tofu, guacamole, and salad with citrus dressing. The feel is at first quite refreshing, but the wheat seems to make this beer a bit heavier, both in the stomach and on the palate. This is one of the more recent products from the Hoegaarden brewery, made as a limited edition in their seasonal beer series. It was launched in 2018 and brewed as a wheat beer made from hops, wheat, yeast, sweet cherry juice, cherry syrup, and hops. The village of Hoegaarden had been known for its witbieren (white beers) since the Middle Ages. In the nineteenth century, the village had thirteen breweries and nine distilleries; [1] however, in 1957, the last local wheat beer brewery, Tomsin, closed its doors. [2] Pierre Celis, a milkman who had grown up next to the brewery and sometimes helped with brewing, decided ten years later to try to revive the style. He started a new brewery, called de Kluis, in his hay loft. [3] [4] Celis used the traditional ingredients of water, yeast, wheat, hops, coriander, and dried Curaçao orange peel known as Laraha. In the 1980s, with demand for the product continuing to grow, Celis bought Hougardia, a former lemonade factory, to expand his brewing operations. Aroma is very bright, but also quite sweet. The orange aroma is right up front and almost a bit tart, followed by some sweet malts and coriander. The flavor is much maltier than the aroma, with a touch of the coriander and some bitterness coming through in the finish. Still quite bright up front, but not nearly as much orange comes through in the flavor compared to the aroma. There is also an herbal and floral flavor, likely from hops. The sweetness becomes a bit much after a while. As with other Hoegaarden products, you’ll find this available online and in physical retail stores. The wheat beer is enjoyed paired with spicy dishes, barbecues, salads, burgers, and pizzas. Its relatively low alcohol content also makes it ideal for small gatherings with family and friends.
