Needle aspiration may be used to test a sample of your breast cells for cancer or drain a small fluid-filled lump (benign cyst). Most people have a core biopsy, but you may be offered a fine needle aspiration (FNA) or another procedure. A punch biopsy uses a small cutting device like a tiny apple corer to remove a sample of breast tissue.

Once the suspicious area has been located, the skin is cleaned and numbing medicine (local anesthesia) is injected into the area. If the lump cannot be easily felt but can be seen on a mammogram or ultrasound, a radiologist may insert a thin wire to mark the suspicious spot prior to the surgeon performing the biopsy. This means that the doctor uses either a mammogram or ultrasound scan to find the exact area to biopsy.

Early diagnosis will prevent migration of the needle which may cause serious complications and lead to the need for complex therapeutic procedures.
