Whilst there is no temperature gauge the belt can be moved up or down the fermentation vessel to control the temperature. To use an electric heat pad, you need to plug it into an electrical outlet and set the temperature to your desired level. The Heat Belt can be used to aid fermentation with one or two demijohns or any make of 5 Gallon/25 Litre vessel and is suitable for both beer, spirits and winemaking.

Heating the yeast directly for too long is probably not ideal so you may want to limit the length of time you use a heat pad to just a week to avoid putting too much stress on the mass of yeast. A brew belt may be insufficient in the cold winter months, the solution is easy, just cover the FV with a blanket.

Both types of device use very little energy and are suitable for both fermenting buckets or carboys and demijohns (although I would urge caution directly heating cold glass).
