Final Thoughts On Best Hiking Headlamp Given the ultralight weight of the Nitecore NU 25, we were impressed that its lighting mode options are fairly comparable to heavier lights we tested like the BioLite 330 and Spot 400. It’s crucial that the headlamp feels comfortable when worn. It also needs to be secure on your head, even when you are running or looking down. It should stretch to fit your head and shouldn’t slip. Ideally, you should forget you’re wearing a headlamp. Let's take a closer look at the two Spot 325* and Spot 350* brand headlamps and see the differences.For minimalists and true ounce-counters, our favorite ultralight headlamp of 2023 is the Nitecore NU25 400 UL. At just 1.6 ounces, the Nitecore secures via a streamlined elastic headband, is surprisingly bright with a 400-lumen max output, and is rechargeable via micro USB. We’ve also found it incredibly easy to operate (cryptic toggling between modes is a common issue with headlamps), with one button for the white beam and one for red, and the battery seemingly lasts forever. All told, as a high-powered emergency light or for those trying to keep their load as light as possible, the NU25 UL is a bright and relatively cheap option. It's worth noting that none of the headlamps we considered are designed for use as a bike light. As a result, we did not use bike mount capability as a make-it-or-break-it criterion when judging headlamps. The biggest advantage of a rechargeable headlamp is not purchasing a new, disposable battery every few months. Disposable batteries, when thrown into the garbage, take centuries to biodegrade.
