Other than this (for me personally), there are too many downsides to the traditional layout to warrant choosing it. Please feel free to let me know if you disagree. A lot of people don’t realise that they actually have a choice here. The typical narrowboat bathroom will consist of a small room next to a thin corridor or passage, meaning the bathroom will often be just over half the width of the boat.

We do plan on having 2 arm chairs, so we can roll them out of the way for my morning exercise. And, generally, work at our desks. Contrary to what you may think, and what is sometimes written elsewhere, the QUALITY of foam and its FIRMNESS are two completely separate aspects. And we'd maybe leave the position of the microwave, but that might also mean compromising on the size of the fridge freezer and I eat a LOT of fresh vegetables. I'm also not happy with the ash wood veneer that's obviously started to peel. And you can see water damage in that area from the windows.

When we first got the boat, there was an IKEA lounge chair on there. And of course, we can sit at the dinette. One has the control panel in, light switch, inverter, Webasto heater, etc. We also store dog food, etc underneath here. And this is where the hob area is. And if you look closely, it's come away. It's wobbling. And this actually isn't attached properly to the kitchen unit. If you do decide you want a dinette, you can go for either an L-shaped or a Pullman dinette. Think of the Pullman as the arrangement you used to see in old train carriages (probably because that’s where the idea came from!!). Two bench seats are positioned face to face with a table in the middle. Pretty simple stuff, really. When seating two people, you will often see two thin chair like benches positioned longways against a wall. For seating four you will find that the Pullman dinette often has to span the full width of the boat. This is why some people opt for the L-shaped…. With ours being a reverse layout, the bedroom is at the front of the boat. And I love the carpentry in here. So you can see the bathroom door is on the left and this is our small double bed.Now, we do love a coffee in the morning. So at the moment, I'm using a very basic coffee maker from home because I've got bags of ground coffee to use up. It's not the best place to put, but right now Hans is loving just sleeping in the walkway, in the corner of the bedroom next to the front door. Our upholstered cushions are made with 4” firm reflex foam and 1” medium for support with a comfortable sink in feel. This can be too firm to sleep on, so we do a 3” firm 2” medium composition instead so that it is suitable for cushions with both sitting and sleeping uses. Then choose sheets and fabrics in a soft and durable material (linen or cotton) that you can cut to the right size to cover the mattresses and benches. You can select either bright, neutral or pastel colours that match the colours you’ve used on the rest of the boat interior. Then opt for the bedlinen of your choice.You can make a cabin with dark wooden walls brighter using light-coloured bedlinen. On the other hand, if your walls are white, why not go for warm or dark coloured sheets to make the space more welcoming? Just like at home, you are advised to keep a spare set of bedlinen, so that you can rotate it while you wash the others. I think the interiors that work the best are the ones that have good mixture of home goods so that everything is not matching. This then creates a stylish personalised look rather than something straight off the production line which has no character.
