In comparison, my memory of the Ortofon 2M Red (on a different table, mind you) was of a rougher sound. If your records are in rough shape or you don't have a real cleaning system for used records, I would stay away. We found its square casing easy to fit and align, and from the outset our sample gave a bright, immediate sound that would work well in pepping up a dull system. OP didn't give a lot of background info, and I gave my "from the hip" opinion like everyone else to start with.

Sound is smooth with a good soundstage, tight bass, slightly recessed mid and detailed slightly pronounced treble. If I was forced to use a conical or elliptical (particular crappy bonded ones) for all of my records, I would have chucked my turntable out the window 6 months after trying to get back into vinyl 7-8 years ago and gone back to CD + digital only. I have both, and agree the 95ML is better, however, I also have the MP200 and in that case I prefer the 200s sound signature, but since it still uses a poor stylus I still rock the 95ML at the very least until I can retip a Micro stylus onto my MP200. The lack of info in the owners manual is frustrating if this is the issue, I feel like I have a pretty typical system.I didn’t find the VM95ml shrill or bright but I did change the capacitance on my preamp every time I used it.

VTA, it usually is best to start with a level arm and you should have a VTA adjustment by just turning the dial/ring at the base of the arm to raise it as some tables need to be raised to perform better, others, a little down at the back (also known as tails up/down). The replacement, the Ame's unit, also from Harbor Freight has been fantastic and can handle spikes well as it's been zapped a time or two when diagnosing my dryer on at least 120V and yet, still works great. According to that person, increasing the capacitance in the phono stage gave a brighter, less muddled sound.I was under the impression that I needed to reduce the capacitance to bring out the high end more but it appears maybe I was wrong.
