Apartheid cannot work as its inventors hoped it would work, but the governing authorities will make no concession that might conceivably lead to a harmonious relationship between white and black. The majority of this section is dominated by a lengthy interview with Albert Schweitzer - theologian, philosopher, missionary and physician (retired and aged 77 at the time) - who I admittedly have never heard of and was skimming over quickly.

Portugal considered its colonies to actually be part of Portugal which considered itself an Afro-European power, and the attitude towards intermarriage was much more open than it was in other European colonies. From the viewpoint of a fellow correspondent, ''The Africans'' is highly readable, uncluttered by statistics and marked by many an insight for the newcomer and more seasoned hand alike. White immigration is discouraged to prevent the racial tensions suffered by the British colonies, and white settlers get as much political rights as natives, which is to say none.

Great Britain at this point seemed to realize that colonialism was over, yet at this point they seemed to simply be trying to postpone the end indefinitely. At this time, Morocco consisted of the main body of land Morocco administered by the French; Spanish Morocco; the Tangier International Zone. I may add that French West Africa and to a lesser degree Liberia are the only parts of Africa with which I am really acquainted.FWA is made up of Mauritania, Ivory Coast, Senegal, French Sudan (now Mali), French Guinea (now Guinea), Haute Volta (French Upper Volta, now Burkina Faso), Dahomey (now Benin) and Niger. People who he views as great men often turned out in reality to be brutal thugs and Africa fell far behind his predictions. ANYONE who reads John Gunther’s Inside Africa, or even reads in it, must be conscious that he is dealing with a journalistic tour de force of extraordinary dimensions. Gunther in his short chapter devoted to French West Africa has treated the subject somewhat inadequately.

Gunther’s reporting without following in his footsteps — which God forbid — it is satisfactory to me to testify to his thoroughly comprehensive treatment of Liberia and his proper, if uninspired, account of French West Africa.

It certainly helped backfill some colonial history I was a bit vague on, and some parts were fascinating. Gunther’s descriptions and narrations agreeably relieve the fairly heavy doses of outright political statistics.
