Featuring two tuneable oscillators, plus a sub-oscillator for enhancing the all-important low end, as well as noise and ring modulation, Bass Station II more than delivers when it comes to generating raw tones. It's also got two distinct analogue filter types – the Classic multi-mode filter of the original Bass Station and the 24dB/octave Acid filter, with its darker, smoother sound – plus plenty of modulation in the shape of two LFOs and a pair of ADSR envelopes. Bass Station II's secret sound-design weapon is envelope retriggering. It’s now possible to configure your envelopes to retrigger once the decay stage has ended, opening up a whole range of new possibilities. The Bass Station Plug-In is shipped with the classic originals along with many more totaling 100 sounds for immediate gratification. The patches cover a huge sonic range from screaming leads to phatt funky basses.

Turning the large cutoff frequency knob is a smoothly satisfying experience, and the display gives a hint as to why this might be. Instead of the 128 possible values of a 7-bit MIDI controller, filter cutoff insists on twice that amount for itself. An extra bit is gained (rather neatly) by reserving two CC numbers instead of one, and this doubled resolution pops up in several other parameters, making a worthwhile contribution in each case. Both oscillator’s pitches can be modulated by LFO1 which has four waveforms, a speed and delay selector plus a depth rotary. They can also be modulated by a Modulation Envelope (ADSR sliders) the depth of which is controlled by another rotary. Both options tend to give you pitch effects from anything like vibrato (subtle adjustments to LFO1 will give you this) to more dramatic movement over a longer period with the Mod Envelope.

To celebrate 25 years of Bass Station and thank you for your support, we're releasing the Bass Station II v2.5 firmware update and giving away a Bass Station II 25th Anniversary Edition These functions are usefully sub-labelled into separate areas; Mod Wheel and Aftertouch assignments, for instance, as well as 'further' options for the synth engine, including sync'ing oscillators 1 and 2 and setting a Swing value for the Arpeggiator engine, to name but a couple of examples. As a test i began creating patches on the hardware and then transfering to the plugin. They were never quite right. I thought it might be the transfer process, so I tried to manually create the same patch on the hardware and Plugin. It was never quite right. Static patches with no movement were close enough. Dynamic patches sounded much better on the hardware (I have had my BS for 9 years so am very familiar with the sound and programming).In the 20 years since its launch, the Bass Station has become something of a classic — and with analogue monosynths enjoying their biggest revival since the early '80s, what better time for a sequel? Novation launched the original Bass Station in 1993 and it became an instant favourite. Its digital oscillators and analogue filter defined countless dance and electronic hits of the 1990s. An incurable sync addict, I didn't wait long before assigning oscillator 2's pitch to the mod wheel. Then, having activated sync, I wallowed in wheel-waggling delusions of Prodigy. Admittedly, the Bass Station 2 (along with almost every synth on the planet) doesn't threaten the Moog Prodigy's richness of sync, but it's not half bad. With a few thoughtful filter tweaks, the raw tones can be pushed in many directions, from dark, grungy basses to razor-sharp, piercing leads. Sync is good. May 2013 Dance MIDI Samples releases "Zebra 2 Soundset By Mikko L" and "Nutty Traxx V-Station Soundset" Bass Station II is fully class compliant, so you can plug into anything via USB and start playing. It also has MIDI I/O on 5 pin din ports, so you can connect your other MIDI gear. You can even connect an external instrument and run it through Bass Station II’s analogue filter and effects. AFX Mode major firmware update released by Novation 5 years after initial release with a ton of new features, including duo mode, which turns this mono synth into a paraphonic weapon.Low Frequency Oscillation which can directly control the harmonic content of the sound by pulse width modulation or filter cut-off. The sharing of controls is a well-established Novation tradition, here continued as painlessly as I've known it. The synth has two oscillators, two LFOs, two envelopes and two filters. With more huddled twosomes than Clapham Common and only a finite amount of panel space, sharing is as logical as it is inevitable. For LFOs and oscillators, this works well enough, thanks to intelligent use of switches. The user interface also has a second type of switch — of the programmable type. For these, there are LEDs that indicate stored values adjacent to each switch. Get instant inspiration – record notes, ties, rests and rhythms in real time using the step sequencer and arpeggiator, then store them for use with any patch. Bass Station II is now a paraphonic monosynth, because the pitches of each of the two oscillators can be controlled separately in its single-voice architecture. Two notes can be played at a time rather than just one, and users can get interesting interactions through the Ring and Filter Mod.

The top half of this monophonic, monotimbral synth is dedicated to the pots, switches, and sliders used to coax audio out of it. All of these are sensibly split into different sections, including the Master section, Oscillator section, LFO section, Filter section, Arpeggiator section, Envelopes section, Effects section and Mixer section. So, for example, in the Master section, you'll find the three-character alphanumeric LED and volume dial while the Filter section is home to the large rotary knob used to control the filter's cut-off frequency or its center frequency. The layout looks a little crowded at first, but everything is grouped together logically and it soon becomes second nature to make tweaks and changes. The build quality is decent, but not outstanding, though.To the right, a Mixer section allows you to blend volumes of the Oscillators and the Sub, whilst a fourth dial here can be toggled between controlling external input volume, Ring Modulation, or a Noise Generator source. In addition to its five-pin In and Out ports, the Bass Station 2 is a USB class-compliant MIDI device, speaking the dusty digital interface with no need of special drivers. It's therefore equally at home with MIDI hardware or your PC or Mac, although my iPad 2 didn't want to know. Very good analogue synth. Great sounds, tweaking options and patches. Great synth for learning about how analogue synths work and sound patch creation. Arpeggiator is fun. Latch is useful for sound creation (latch simply makes the key continue to play even when you remove your finger from the key). Midi works well, but I must point out better as a slave device than as a master. It goes out of sync if I set it as master with Volca devices (which only can act as a slave device if not Korg branding), but is flawless as slave for any other midi out device.
