Shokz’s first foray into this market hit the sweet spot for me because of its comfort, sound quality, and appearance. And as a major bonus, the Shokz OpenFit gives wearers much more situational awareness than competing in-ear audio devices. Having cornered the bone-conduction headphones market, Shokz is trying something new with the Shokz OpenFit. These open-ear headphones leave your bones well alone and your ear canals unobstructed to provide environmental awareness while you enjoy whatever it is you’re listening to. This is better than many of the best true wireless earbuds although isn’t quite as impressive as the IP55 rating from the Shokz Open Run Pro. It does mean they’ll be fine throughout even the sweatiest of workouts – just not a dip in the pool.

From the very beginning, Shokz has been a trailblazer in the realm of open-ear listening technology. Much better sound quality than previous models, but please refer to no 2 of the negatives. Conclusion and alternatives to the Shokz OpenFit OpenFit comes with an IP54 rating, which is much lower than most other Shokz products. It means that even a bit too much sweat can damage the earphones, so it’s best not to use them for any exercise that’s too strenuous. Jogging should be safe for the most part, but when you notice that you’re starting to sweat too much, it’s best to take the earphones off. Sound Quality

These earphones are quite a significant change in direction for Shokz. It doesn’t mean the company will stop manufacturing bone conduction headphones; that is still its primary focus. But the OpenFit differs from other air conduction earphones, as I’ve found after spending some time with it. Let’s look at it more closely. What Makes OpenFit Different? Shokz OpenFit earphones are great for general, everyday use. They aren’t ideal for audiophiles, and their water resistance rating is very low. Still, as Shokz’s first venture into air-conduction earphones, they offer decent sound quality, incredible comfort, and good environmental awareness. The Shokz OpenFit empowers you to enjoy your music and podcasts without compromising your safety, be it hearing a car approaching from behind or engaging in a conversation with a friend. The Shokz OpenFit will undoubtedly split opinion. On the one hand, they excel within a particular niche. They’re excellent for listening to music when you’re running, cycling when you want to remain aware of what’s going on around you, and in the gym (so long as it's not too loud). And for those who dislike the feel of earbuds, they’re a lightweight and non-intrusive alternative to bulky over ear headphones.

Shokz is using what it calls DirectPitch technology to do this, which is similar to air conduction. It uses sound waves to optimize the distance and angle between the earbud and your ear. This leads to more sound pressure directed right at your ear and less off into other directions. I also accidentally pushed the buttons a lot. The buttons themselves are unreliable; sometimes they’re sensitive enough that readjusting my hair can stop a song. Other times I can determinedly tap “skip” several times at a stoplight without any result whatsoever. There are a couple of standard true wireless earbuds features you won’t find here. There’s no multi-point pairing mode and no ear detection either, so remove one and your music will keep playing. Although you can just listen with one bud, which is handy. However, once I did get the fit right, I found them incredibly comfortable. Lots of audio and wearable tech brands say you’ll forget you’re wearing their gadgets and I’ve never believed them. But I genuinely couldn’t feel that I had these on at times – a major testament to their light and comfortable design and ergonomic fit. Having said that, I did experience some movement at times when I was running and when I did a pretty hardcore HIIT class. With every other type of exercise, though, they stayed firmly in place. Stay engaged on calls or video conferences while being aware of your surroundings. You can hear your partner, kids, or pets when they need you, and achieve work-life balance and effective communication from home.
